When you drape the cage the skunk will hit it if he/she sprays. The "spray" would be out of it's rear and would hit the blanket, or out of the front where you are not standing. If it had rabies it would come out at anytime, it wouldn't wait for dark, and I don't know, but I doubt it would be digging and looking for food.
