The Walmart tactic, and other stores like it, are uping the hours a 'part-time' employee must work to be eligible for health care. As of Feb of 2012, you must average over 30 hours over 26 pay periods to be eligible for single person coverage. Spouses are not covered, dependents children under 19 are covered at extra cost. Since they now only hire part time or temp workers, they will not have to pay for very many employees.
A part time worker is not eligible for:
dental. optional AD&D, life, dependent life, company paid life or disability coverage.
A temp worker is not eligible for anything.
Part time workers can work 33.9 hours per week and still be classified as part time.
Even if you are lucky enough to qualify, the Walmart plan is very similar to Obama's bronze plan, with a $5000 deductible (for one person) and only 60% payout after that. Premiums are around $250 per pay check, deducted twice monthly. Considering you only make about $450 a paycheck, good luck with what is left.
