From what the guy who disarmed him said he did get in some fist to his face/body before he got away. Here again calls for removing guns when there is ample number of events that could have happened to have prevented this.
This is an individual who is mental and should not have been walking around. Maybe now he will never have an opportunity to kill again. I'm waiting to hear why the father thought it ok to return his guns to him when he told the police he wouldn't do that.
I'm thinking the father now may share in some of the blame, possibly rightfully so.
I have a CCP and usually have my weapon with me these days and although I don't believe I'd have any problem using it for protection of myself, my family, or others it is the last thing I would ever want to have to do. Something I would try to avoid at all cost. Some people though have no care or feeling about human life. Sadly!
