The first ayatollah in the regime stated that it was worth Iran burning in complete destruction if it meant the triumph of Islam. Western apologists explained this away as hyperbole. We in the west have mostly forgotten the madness of the true religious fanatic (mostly to the good). We did see variants in the first portion of the 20th century. Communist fanatics exterminated 180 million as part of their new religion. Japanese slaughtered hundred of thousands of civilians and threw their own lives way in suicidal banzai attacks and as kamikaze pilots -- all to propitiate a divine emperor-god. National Socialism founded a syncretic religion based on leader, folk and blood. Then, slaughtered millions in its defense.

I'd take the Islamists at their word.
