This one could be seen far in advance.  I was amazed that Gander Mountain didn't announce the local store was closing when it was announced that the chain was declaring bankruptcy but I fully expected that once Academy Sports opened Gander Mountain's closing would be a foregone conclusion.

It didn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that given D**I**C**K**S expansion into Field & Stream along with Academy Sports opening that the area could not or would not support three major sporting good chains.   I hate to see the jobs disappear and the store is not that old of a store but then from what I hear one reason Gander Mountain declared bankruptcy was they expanded far too fast and aggressively.  Field & Stream may have a large firearms selection but that remains to be seen and Academy Sports, while selling firearms, none seemed to have a vast a selection as Gander Mountain.  Gander Mountain's problem was that their prices was far too high and they didn't compete very well with their competitors.

I was in the Florence Gander Mountain and had a short conversation with one of the associates.  With the change in ownership, most of the stores will be closing and not reopening.  The Florence store, after selling all the remaining merchandise in the store, will close, have a name change, and then reopen.  Not sure yet what the store name will be, but it will be under the umbrella of the Camping World corporation.

Maybe it will be Broken Back Mountain.

Seems to me Lemonis' tweets first about all stores being closed, then here's a list of those that will remain open, and now it ain't over yet are less about business decisions and more about cultivating drama.  Unless they come back in another life being more competitive, it won't make a tinker's dam.

OldSalt, while you were in the Florence GM what were your impressions of the "sale" prices?  Were they down to WalMart retail?

Don't know how the prices compare to Walmart, if there is a comparison.  I've learned over the years and through former employees of Walmart that they have different product specifications (cheaper, lower quality) that don't compare to products labeled the same in other stores.  But anyway, in Gander Mountain, none of the firearms or ammunition is discounted (right now anyway), and other items are only 10% or 20% discounted.

Thanks for the reply.  Actually I was being factious, but a bit truthful, when I asked if GM sales prices had dropped to WalMart retail meaning that when GM ever did have a sale, it was about you could expect to pay retail anytime anywhere else.

BTW, far as labeling goes, I agree with you except a firearms.  For instance, a Marlin labeled a 336w is the same 336w anywhere you buy it.  The only difference is the $$$ you pay wherever you purchase it.  Right now, they're $400 at Academy, $470 at Bass Pro, and $480 at Cabelas and D icks.  So if the local WM has one, its the same one maybe cheaper but not lower quality.

Actually it was about confused sheepherders (Looked it Up!), should have stayed with sheep and converted to Islam:

Plot

In 1963, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist are hired by Joe Aguirre to herd his sheep through the summer in the Wyoming mountains. After a night of heavy drinking, Jack makes a pass at Ennis, who is initially hesitant but eventually responds to Jack's advances. Despite Ennis informing Jack that it was a one-time incident, they develop a passionate sexual and emotional relationship. Shortly after discovering their summer together is being cut short, they briefly fight and each is bloodied.

Ennyway, picked up a nice looking yugo M24/47 at the goose-big-hill at a decent price. After scrubbing out a ton of cosmoline, it seems to shoot better than I can. My son has talked me into putting a scope on it (long eye relief), so I'll see if he can cluster some better constructed reloads in a nice group.

Cowboys, cattle herders, rodeo riders, that protected a herd of sheep one summer for the money.

By long eye relief, I presume you're mounting the scope on the barrel to avoid drilling / tapping the receiver and bending the bolt.  What brand / model of scope mount are you using?  One that replaces the rear sight?

I believe this no gunsmith mount is sold by more than one company and seems to lock up tightly and yes it replaces the rear sight. It supposedly fits both the large and small ring Mauser actions (98k-large ring, yugo action based on small ring FN's); I did have to swap places of the two large set screws to get the mount to lock in securely. I mounted a "pistol scope" on it and as soon as my son gets able to make it to the range, we're going to try it out. I have a 98k as well that my son keeps bugging me to scope as well. If it were up to him, everything would have a scope, including my thumb busters.

Thanks.  I remember "back in the day" B-Square had a reputation for making no smithing required scope mounts replacing the rear sights on military rifles.  What kind of pistol scope?   I have one on a T/C Contender but make/model doesn't come to mind right now.  I see no reason it wouldn't work on a long gun.  But when you said long eye relief, I had in mind the sort of  scopes used on "scout" rifles.  The older my eyes get, the more optics are the way to go.  But nowadays, as your son most likely has pointed out, technology demands it.  Think thermal imaging.  Let us know how your rig works out.

I don't remember the brand and I'm lazy and don't feel like chasing upstairs to look, but the brand isn't Leupold or Redfield. I think if it said howdy it would either be nihao or oh-hai-yo. I believe it has up to 24-25 in. eye relief on the long end and 6-7" on the short end and I believe it was marketed for both pistols and rifles like the Win 94. I think it's a 2X-7X variable.

I still like iron sights to give my eyes some exercise, but yeah it's time to break out the sight paint and even if I can see what I'm shooting at, the damm thing won't stop moving even if it's inanimate.

oh-hai-yo.  LOL.

Off hand, anything above 2x on a handgun is more than my nerves can handle.  Talk about **** things moving, 2x+ gives life to the inanimate!

Except for the T/C which is a heavy barrel .22lr and a fine squirrel gun, the rest that have optics have red dots.  And if I wasn't so lazy, I'd go see what I've given up trying to remember.

Iron works for me plinking, or period arms and no choice when required for target, but with these old eyes, give me optics on everything else but scatterguns.

If they need exercise, I'll look at wemmen.

For us old guys, I'd suggest cataract surgery, if you need it.  Now, need reading glasses, but have 20-15 far vision. Plus, ultra-violet and night vision are great.

Where does that put you in deciding to use iron or optics?

Use both, I'm responding to those who complain of age and inability to use both.

I can use both with the aid of corrective lenses as well.  But sight alignment / picture ain't what it used to be without them.  Part of the aging process, I'm told.

The fact is when it comes to shooting, technology has spoiled me, given me choices and enabled me to have preferences I've never had before.  Talk about night vision . . . and now thermal imaging . . . wow!

Then I whine about it 'cause it ain't what it used to be.  Go figure.

I almost fergot to report, my son and I got around to trying out the scoped M-24/47. Fun and interesting toy became more fun and interesting. Accuracy was well within MOB (Minute of Bambi) and MONA (Minute of Nekkid Ape).

Sounds like fun.

It was definitely fun, and good fadder-son time. Jt might read more into it since it's a black (deep blued) rifle the Serbians assaulted their enemies with. Even takes clips:
