How Obamacare Is Fueling America's Opioid Epidemic

Not long ago Dr. Bill Sullivan, an emergency-room physician in rural Spring Valley, Ill., refused to prescribe a potentially habit-forming painkiller to a patient that had requested it by name. That might seem like a good thing since opioid addiction has become a national epidemic. But in fact, as a result of reforms put in place under the Affordable Care Act, he may have put his hospital at financial risk.

As part of an Obamacare initiative meant to reward quality care, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is allocating some $1.5 billion in Medicare payments to hospitals based on criteria that include patient-satisfaction surveys. Among the questions: “During this hospital stay, how often did the hospital staff do everything they could to help you with your pain?” And: “How often was your pain well controlled?”

U.S. Charges 412, Including Doctors, in $1.3 Billion Health Fraud

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of people nationwide, including dozens of doctors, have been charged in health care fraud prosecutions, accused of collectively defrauding the government of $1.3 billion, the Justice Department said on Thursday.

Nearly one-third of the 412 charged were accused of opioid-related crimes. The health care providers, about 50 of them doctors, billed Medicare and Medicaid for drugs that were never purchased; collected money for false rehabilitation treatments and tests; and gave out prescriptions for cash, according to prosecutors.

Some of the doctors wrote more prescriptions for controlled substances in a single month than entire hospitals wrote in that time, the acting director of the F.B.I., Andrew G. McCabe, said at a news conference in Washington of federal law enforcement and health care officials who announced the prosecutions.

“This event again highlights the enormity of the fraud challenge we face,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said.

If the newest version of the Democratic(?) Party comes to power and changes the electoral process to become a monolith where they need the addict vote, nothing will change. Also, as in Dem strongholds like Chicago, drug gangs won't be prosecuted for a while to keep people on the goobermint plantation until a new reality dawns on Democrats socialists; there isn't enough of "someone else's money" to spend if there is no viable economy. Then socialists evolve and will put on their jackboots and use chairman Mao's cure:

Alabama #1 – I Prescribe to the Crimson Tide..Roll Tide Roll for my medicine….  Not the Shrink who has to listen to those who choose to complain about their back hurting all the time and need pain killers, due to their decisions earlier in life, from taking pills “Recreationally”. Next they are hopping from Dr. to Dr., hoping to find one who will recognize the "Pain", the patient is experiencing and come up with a diagnosis plus receive a prescription for such Pain Control . Drug Abusers Con Doctors all the time and keep in mind, few Doctors go along with the game. Makes one think, where’s the Self-Control by the Abusers who make these Life Altering Decisions affecting their mind & body. Abusers make these Decisions because They Choose To, initially. Abusers are Responsible for themselves even having been taught/educated throughout their life, the harmful effects from drugs & drug abuse… After all, it’s their body and can do whatever they want to it, so the Democrats abortionist would say….Nor do I want to have to pay for societies adult abuser’s stupid decision making process going on upstairs in their screwed up head. I know it sounds harsh and if its your kid, you will do whatever you can to get them help from a qualified drug addiction facility. I understand it not cheap & that loan on your retirement 401-k saving plan will come in handy. Ask an abuser if they are responsible for the condition they are in and bet you will get every excuse in the world or perhaps, an answer you don’t want to hear.. You would have to step in and take charge of their life for them, even at mid-life. At this point it’s too late for the easy drug addiction fix.

And to think, some abusers will say,”I don’t do street drugs, that’s for low life’s” “I have prescriptions for my medicine”, doctor say's I have XYZ Syndrome. And that makes it all “Okey Dokey”. Abuse is Abuse no matter what veil covers the truth. All the selfish me, me, me, druggies will vote democrat as long as they can focus long enough to go vote to get the hanging carrot of free drugs & drug addiction center payments, paid by tax payers. For Druggies – Desperate People Do Desperate Things (Street or Prescription types).

2018 Elections: I bet the Dems & Big left wing media will make a big crisis push for drug voters & their families during election time.

If you are in your 20's, the harsh reality while doing your Fair Share PLUS EXTRAS of Drugs, You gonna Die Sooner than normally expected.  Your body chemistry is being rearranged/altered from it's normal design to function properly. Wise Up People - Take Some Responsibility, before its Too Late.

Start with determining the cause[s].

Deal with each cause separately as compassionately or harshly as the cause may  dictate.

The doctors and the druggists are not doing enough to warn people about the opiates. I know from personal experience. I had an industrial accident. The doctor prescribed a 2 month subscription for an opiate. No warnings. The druggist filled it, no warnings. I noticed the label said "may be habit forming". I asked the druggist what that meant, he said after you get your arm healed, you'll have to get weaned off these pills. My reply, I weaned myself off of Marlboros and I'm not taking anything that I have to be weaned from. I went through the worst pain of my life, but I didn't have to go through any withdrawal. If you go to the dentist, they offer you prescription Tylenol, better check it, it probably started with an opioid.

Okay.  You've been there.  What more should they do?

Congrats for kicking the cancer sticks.  I know how trying that can be especially cold turkey after 25 years.  If I'd been smokin' Marlboro, I could have kicked them in a day.  Soooo nasty.

I suspect that the biggest reason that opioid use has skyrocketed is that it's cheaper to treat the symptoms rather than fix the problems of patients. I might also note that states that expanded Medicaid coverage are seeing the highest number of opioid overdose deaths, so placing folks on goobermint healthcare probably ain't the fix.
