"Now, at the first sign of stagnation, the university kicked one of its own under the bus."

So how long does something need to be stagnant before it starts to smell? The offense has been stagnant for four years and the oft quoted 10 win season is directly attributable to having probably the best defense in the country that year.

Furthermore I don't think many folks would mind being kicked under a 4 million dollar bus.

Lastly if Shula was doing such a bang up job at Alabama as you imply there should be lot's of big name programs clamoring for his head coaching services next year. I don't think I would hold my breath to see if that happens however.

I love it that you mention Miss St, especially that you used my Alma Mater's football team in the same context as Arkansas and Florida. Don't forget that MSU, in it's only big win this season, shut down Alabama this year. We were playing a QB that suffered a broken collarbone at the beginning of the season. My favorite highlight was the brick wall our defense put up at the goal line at the end of the first half.

Folks, MSU lost to TULANE this year. Losing to MSU was unacceptable to Alabama. Add to that the other big losses and someone had to pay. That person didn't have to be Shula, but Shula it became.
As an alum... I'm concerned by the repeated hiring and firing for this position. Isn't this going to create a situation where NO good coach is going to want to come to UA, because they'd already know their head would simply be the next to "roll" ?! (pun intended)

Also... shouldn't the character of the coach and what the boys on the team gain from him in strength as men of integrity count for something? Don't students go to college for the purpose of growing such characteristics? There are valuable life lessons to be learned from a coach in losing as well as winning.

When we prize winning above what these "kids" are learning through their experience, I think we do them an injustice. The only lesson I see being taught to them these days is... winning is all that matters, and it must be achieved at any cost. How sad. (Gal 1:10 esp. NIV)
Dennis Francione said it best this past week:

"Alabama eats its own.."

Very true the past few days.

Bottom line:

1. Alabama has a problem with not putting down the houndstooth hat. Pat Dye said that this past week. Don't laugh. He played against Alabama while at Georgia, coached for Bear at Alabama for 9 years, and coached against them for 11 years at Auburn. I think he knows more than most.

2. Probation, probation, probation. Today, the NCAA will punish you via scholarship reductions and loss of bowls. Used to, just loss of bowls and TV time. Now, loss of scholarships will kill a program. That is what happens when rougue boosters not under control get away with murder. Auburn paid for its sins, now Alabama surely is.

I think this whole ordeal hurts Alabama, but they brought it upon themselves. As a result, it hurts the Iron Bowl....remember 1994? Or 1971? Or 1974? How about the 1980's Back then, both schools were at the top, now, one or the other is down...and the country pays attention instead to Michigan-OSU...

Sad that there is very little in the news about the players. They are the ones most affected (other than Shula's family.) They are smart enough to see through Moore's fake concern. If he cared he would have at least had the decency to fire Shula before the scheduled meeting with players instead of leaving a note for Shula to come to his house an hour later and fire him and not allow him to meet with the team again. Is that caring?

What are the players and younger fans learning from this? Not a good lesson for sure.
