A while back, given the political discourse and rumors, one could expect it but today there still is a situation that seems to have not been remedied by time.  Has anyone else noticed that the availability of .22 caliber rimfire shells, particularly in Hollow Point category, is almost inexistent?  Then where you do find the ammo the price has shot up to unbelievable levels and stayed there.

Wasn't long ago that one could find a "brick" (1000 round box) for not too bad a price but today you can't hardly even find the 50 qty boxes around.  I get it that when there is talk about enacting new firearms legislation that people go out and hoard products but over time that usually resolves itself and availability catches up with demand but right now it seems that manufacturers are not catching up with demand.  Maybe I'm wrong but that what it seems at least.

If you owned a bullet factory, and, for years there was a steady demand for your product. Demand suddenly, for no good reason, went way, way up, would you invest in a new factory for what might be a short term thing, or would you make the same amount and charge many times as much. Which would make many times the profit with no risk of losing money on the new building.

DProduction has not changed, demand has.  Conversion kits using .22 in larger calibers have proliferated, preppers are stocking up, others doing the same for investment reasons, All of these contribute to the scarcity.  If one checks, .22 may be found at D*i*c*k*s and Gander in small amounts. D****s limits sales to ensure more customers receive them, not just those stocking up.  The ammo may be found on the internet.

Haven't thought about it much.

I don't shoot as much as I used to.

Plus, I bought ammo years ago.

Most recent was 880 rds of 7.62x54R.

After this thread started, I did an inventory of what I had "on hand" and "stashed" at other locations.

I'm in pretty good shape.

6 bricks of 500 count  .22 Long Rifle+ 6 boxes of 50 count. All Hollow points.

Funny. the 50 counts have price stickers of $2.99. Bought at a rural Country Store.

That's 3300 .22 Hollow Points, and I'm down to only THREE .22 firearms.

An OLD scoped (3x9) .22 single shot Stevens/Springfield, that can drive tacks, with the right ammo. A "never fired" tube fed Semi Auto Marlin 60M, and a 1958 Remington magazine fed 511.

I can harvest small animals if needed.

1200 7.62x54R rounds. (I have 3 Mosin Nagants scattered around)

300  7.62x39. I need to pick up some more.

300  9x18 Makarovs, Which, includes Ex-Cold War military surplus. And! one box of "Critical Defense".

200   rounds of various .40 cal.

200   8mm Mauser.

50 .38 S&W.

10   7.53 Mauser. Bought at a Flea Market, just because.

ONE .243??? I've never owned a .243?

And! 6   6.5 Jap Arisaka rounds????

About a month ago, I took a friend visiting from CA to Larry's P&P West.  He was amazed that I could purchase a handgun, fill out the 473, have an instant background check and walk out with it.

My point is, the handgun was .22lr and I was asked if I needed any ammo.  I didn't but I can't say what they offered were hollowpoints, but not very long ago, hp's were all you could find.  Round nose, standard velocity, were repackaged as "target" rounds and sold per 50 for more.

Apparently Larry is well stocked.  And has been since the store opened.  If hp's are in short supply from the regular suppliers, it's news to me.

I can't afford Gander.  I bought a Henry lever action .22lr from Larry $100 less than GM.  Hopefully, Cabelas will bring them some much needed competition.

Harald, if that .243 round is taking up too much room, I'll take it off your hands.
