One morning in August 1981, 3-year-old Kelly Keen wandered out the door of her home and into her family’s front yard. That was the last day of Kelly’s life.

Kelly wasn’t hit by a car or abducted by a stranger. She was killed by a lone coyote. Within seconds of the attack, Kelly’s father managed to force the coyote to release Kelly’s head and chase the canine away. But it was too late. Kelly died four hours later in Glendale Adventist Hospital from blood loss and a broken neck.

Coyotes are everywhere now and shouldn't be underestimated.

Coyotes were taking several of my neighbor's goats.  He tried to solve the problem with a mated pair of Great Pyrenees, but the losses continued and he figured the dogs may have become the problem.  Replaced the dogs with a Jenny.  No more losses.

We'll take a coyote during deer hunting season and any other time the opportunity presents itself.  Occasionally, during the off season, some of the hunters will call them in to a decoy.  Last season, we got 4 with exceptional coats for this area.

____

They are in all the lower 48 states and Alaska; none in Hawaii. They are found in New York City. They are in Lauderdale County and within the city limits of Florence.  I have seen them strutting along in broad daylight  in open areas just north of Cox Creek Parkway between Chisholm Road and Cloverdale Road.

The expansion of the range of the coyote is a consequence of human activity:

"The coyote's pre-Columbian range was limited to the south-west and plains regions of the U.S. and Canada, and northern and central Mexico. By the 19th century, the species expanded north and west, expanding further after 1900, coinciding with land conversion and the extirpation of wolves. By this time, its range encompassed all of the U.S. and Mexico, southward into Central America, and northward into most of Canada and Alaska. This expansion is ongoing, and the species now occupies the majority of areas between 8°N (Panama) and 70°N (northern Alaska)."

"The bustard's a marvelous fowl

With minimal reason to howl.

It escaped what would be

Illegitimacy,

By the grace of a fortunate vowel!"

Funny poem.

I didn't think they'd let me say "*******".

Same for feral dogs, and drop-offs.

Never took but one, well placed shot.

Put a little variety in your mammal reduction program.  Sight in on feral cats, which are among the most destructive of all "domestic" animals.

We used to take them to the sale barn but now sell them to a guy who then takes them to the sale barn. We sell 6 month old ones for about $50 each. We have sold big bucks for $150. I have heard of pure breds going into the thousands of dollars.

We've been told that buyers come from the cities to the sale barn to buy goats up for meat for Middle Easterners. Goat meat is the most common/popular meat in the world.

Think if I put my Amish heater out in the back yard, that would work?

Maybe--if you smear it with a little catnip!

"Do you feed them tin cans?"--Most ignorant belief about goats.

Answer THIS question for the ages:

"Why reeks the goat on yonder hill

Who dines all day on chlorophyll?"

Here is a goat song for you:

Goats are, in my estimation, at least 5 times more intelligent than sheep or cattle.

Nothing is cuter than a baby goat!

All for today on goats.
