I'm just glad that Georges got a mention whether or not they are the best. I do though believe that they are among the top steak places in the state but I've had great steaks at various places other than Georges. I too enjoy the Seafood Platter at Georges because of the Red Snapper because you can't find Red Snapper too many places anymore. I also think their butterfly fried shrimp is among the best in the area.
I, too, agree that Dales Steakhouse (sadly) went downhill fast before they sold out to Sperry's. I also hated to see Sperry's leave because I thought, although different than Dales, they had a very good quality steak and we enjoyed dining there. I didn't think too much of their catering menus and selections but as for the Steak offerings I thought they served a great product.
Eddie (Crocodile Ed's) Robbins also offered a good product and the atmosphere wasn't that bad either but their service and the way their help treated the customer base was atrocious and I believe, in part, led to them closing, that and the "fine dining" motif that just didn't go over.
As I see it, and I'm certainly no expert in the area, there are only a few different Steak offerings. Along the "fine dining" or higher end offerings you have Georges Steak Pit, 360 Grille then you have the chain steakhouses where I believe Outback & Longhorn are at the higher end followed by Texas Roadhouse and then Logan's Steakhouse then in a more general sense you have Chili's and Applebees. Then you have the local flavor or local offerings such as Oh Bryans' and Stanfields and like City Hardware. I know I'm leaving out some but along with Dales I also miss Big Mikes as I always enjoyed their steaks especially when he was running the Chisholm Rd Steak restaurant where the steaks were cooked on the grill right by the door as you entered and you could have the steaks cut specifically to your requirements and then prepared on the open grille. I also enjoyed their hushpuppies that they gave you when you sat down. Oh well long gone now though.
As for great steaks though I also have to say I greatly enjoy the ones that I prepare on my Webber grille (Charcoal and Gas models) and with regards to the steaks I believe that Sam's Club and Publix offers the best meat in the area. That's another thing though that I've noticed missing over the last few years and that is quality butcher shops where you could buy your meat direct. Oguirres was the best but then there was Pete's Meat market also. Seems that the local Butcher shops are becoming obsolete or greatly endangered.
If anyone is aware of any good butcher shops around the area I'd appreciate you mentioning them and where they are at. Also if you are in the Huntsville (Bridge Street) area I'd recommend you try Connor's Steakhouse. Connor's is a part of the Restaurant group that has the Chop House in it. The closest Chop House is located in Manchester, TN or Chattanooga, TN but mostly originated around Knoxville, Tennessee area. They have a pretty good steak but they also serve some great "Creamed Spinach" . Usually when we travel to Huntsville we can't seem to try out the other places I've got on my list for eating at Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen and Connor's Steakhouse. But then I don't make it to Huntsville that often.
