Once again, Chris Lilly and his Big Bob Gibson barbeque team won the competition at the Superbowl of pork barbeque--Memphis in May.   They beat out an equally impressive team led by Melissa Cookson, owner of Memphis Barbecue Company in Horn Lake, MS.

It's just too bad that Mr. Lilly's restaurant barbeque in Decatur is not up to the standards of his competition barbeque.  It's okay in quality, but there are many barbeque places in Memphis that serve much, much  better barbeque.

I'd just be happy to have a great barbeque place in The Shoals that served great barbeque and great side orders.  You know, a restaurant with hefty servings and decent prices.

I've been appalled at the amount of barbeque served on sandwiches at Rick's Bar-B-Q and Bunyans in the past.

When you go to Big Bob's in Decatur, do NOT expect to be served the same quality BBQ that they produce for the Memphis in May competition. This applies not only to BB's but to this kind of competition in general. The care and prayer that produces that Memphis meat is too demanding for every-day mass production at a retail restaurant scale.  Judge a restaurant's BBQ by what you get when you go there and eat the stuff cooked onsite.

Big Bob's is pretty good, tho.

From my experience the best Ribs I ever tried was those produced and served at the 2nd Street Rib Shack/Factory when it was in business.  Now the building houses an ALFA Insurance agency I think but man for a while they had a huge business and grew at a steady rate but then either sold out or decided the restaurant business wasn't for them.   Either way they, the original ones, had the best I have tried (wet and dry rub)

As far as the wife and I are concerned, from our own experience, the best pork bbq in the Shoals area (only locations are Rogersville & Muscle Shoals) is Witt's BBQ and neither location has eat in ability.  As far as BBQ Chicken is concerned we like Southern BBQ on Wilson Dam Road which also has great sweet tea and beans.  Also even though I don't usually go for the hot sauce when I'm over around Madison, and want BBQ I usually try and go to Thomas's BBQ.

As for Ribs I have yet to find a place and ribs that are as good as I found at the small Rib restaurant that briefly opened on 2nd Street over in Muscle Shoals/Sheffield.  Man they had a great product both wet and dry ribs and although they were cooked in Russellville and brought to the store, to be reheated at the store, in coolers they had the best ribs I've ever had anywhere.   I greatly regret that they ever sold out to the folks they did for whatever changes they made surely made it inevitable that the place would eventually fail because they couldn't produce the same quality product as the original group.

I agree about the barbeque pork at Witts being very, very good.  It's a shame that they don't know how to make decent beans, and their slaw is junk.  (I'm hung on Bunyans slaw bought in the grocery store.)

I too long for great ribs, and I think the best I've had in years was at the Leonards' bbq buffet at lunch over in Memphis--off Mendenhall.  I've come to fear for my life after dark in downtown Memphis, and seldom get to the Rendezvous--my favorite Q ambiance.

I've heard the Southern BBQ on Wilson Dam Road is very good, however you know us Lauderdalians seldom cross the river for anything.

I ate at Thomas BBQ in Madison last week.  It was good meat, however they are so expensive for such little food.

When going to Huntsville, we often stopped at Lawlers BBQ at the Athens interstate exit.  The food's good, and they're quick and efficient.  The lady on the register lives in East Lauderdale.

I'm still longing for that real Kick *** barbeque restaurant that really knows what they're doing in every department.
