Uh huh. Leave it to the Japanese to take something totally mediocre and make it epically suck just to be different. I see nothing appealing whatsoever about these. Burger King's normal, U.S. fare blows even on a good day.
Reports are that Japanese find them tasty. Rather like most Japanese cuisine, except that nasty rotten bean curd. Squid in its own ink, spaghetti in squid ink and similar are eaten in a number of countries. Remember a cafe in Georgetown that served the spaghetti -- rather tasty.

Dried octopus is another Japanese "delicacy". It comes in the form of a severely flattened specimen compacted to an overall thickness of about 3/16 inch and it stinks to high heaven. They pull off pieces of this molluscan corpse and eat them, seemingly oblivious to the stench. Gag a MAGGOT!
Never had that in Japan, did have dried octopus in Korea. The taste isn't bad, but the dammed thing was so tough one could chew on it for hours. Could sole a shoe with ot.
