Basketball league for white Americans targets Augusta

A new professional basketball league boasting rosters made up exclusively of white Americans has its eyes set on Augusta, but the team isn't receiving a warm welcome.

The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, who has publicly expressed his support for minor league teams in the past, said he would not do the same for this team.

"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."

Clint Bryant, athletic director at Augusta State University, laughed when he heard the news.

"It's so absurd, it's funny, but it gives you an idea of the sickness of our society" he said. "It shows you what lengths people will go to just to be mean-spirited. I think at any basketball level, no matter if it's all black, all white, all Hispanic, all Asian or anyone else, the players should just be a basketball team."

Don "Moose" Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA, said the reasoning behind the league's roster restrictions is not racism.

"There's nothing hatred about what we're doing," he said. "I don't hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas' indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans' dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."

The Atlanta-based league, which will operate as a single-entity owning all of its teams, is looking for local contacts to pay $10,000 to become a "licensee" in one of 12 cities throughout the Southeast. Lewis said he has already received threats from people opposed to the roster restrictions and several cities have told him to stay out of town. Lewis said he has yet to hear from any one in Augusta.

"We need a local person ingrained into the community to make this successful," he said.

Lewis said he expects to eventually find support in every town with a team.

"People will come out and support a product they can identify with. I'm the spoken minority right now, but if people will give us a chance, it'll work... The white game of basketball, which is essentially a fundamental game, works."

Lewis said he wasn't sure where the team will play.

Augusta has had problems with minor league basketball teams in the past, but the issues never centered around race. The Augusta Drive lasted less than a month before folding in 1995, citing financial reasons. The Augusta Groove made it through a full, 20-game schedule in 2009, but accusations from players and local businesses that the team wasn't paying its bills surrounded the team during the second half of the season. The team later shut down in the offseason.

Aren't the owners in the NBA majority white? I guess you have to ask them.

The difference between the NBA and what this man wants is the NBA does not limit people based on the color of their skin or the country they were born in.

I'd guess because for the salaries these guys make, the owners want the best players they can get. I'm not a big basketball fan but there are or have been some great players of all colors. Take Yao Ming for example. He's Chinese and plays for the Rockets. Tallest player in the NBA at 7'6" but would have no place in this crazy whitebread league they're talking about. Back in the day when I actually paid attention to the NBA, Boston had some of the best white players around (Byrd, Ainge, Laimbeer, etc.) So now it happens that a lot of the greats are black. So what? They're the cream of the crop. I'm sure NBA teams don't set out to recruit black, white, yellow or red. They want the best players. And that's what they pay for. Some races happen to excel at certain sports. How many black NHL players are there? PGA golfers? Tennis? And as far as being opposed to "street ball," personally while I seldom watch b'ball anymore, I do like the fast paced scoring in the NBA. This nut's vision of "fundamental basketball" makes me think of the movie Hoosiers where they're supposed to pass the ball at least 5 times before taking a shot. I'd rather watch bowling. This whole thing is a crock and another embarrassment to this country.
Hi all,

Several things come to mind when I read the initial post:

The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

The name itself is defies the founders dream: All-American, to me, means folks from the pastiest white to the blackest black -- with all shades of brown, yellow, red, etc., in between. So, if this person wants an All-American sports league -- maybe he should name it the Rainbow League (no Jesse Jackson pun intended).

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.

This would mean that the President of the United States cannot be a part of this new league.

[i]"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?"
he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."

While I agree that all incidents such as this should be punished harshly; the number of incidents such as this occurring in basketball, football, and all sports EXCEPT hockey are small.

On the other hand, in hockey the players cannot seem to skate from one end to the other without some kind of fighting and physical attack. Yet, no one says anything about this -- just part of the game. If such incidents occurred in football, basketball, and other sports -- the players would be evicted from the game immediately and most likely punished by the league. But, not in hockey; they just smile about it.

And, guess what: HOCKEY IS PRIMARILY ALL WHITE MEN! So much for this person's reasons for starting his Anti-American League.

To be honest with you, I watch the Sports News every night -- until hockey comes on the screen; then I turn off the television. I don't want to watch grown men acting like school yard punks and bullies. And, I would most certainly discourage my grandchildren from playing this game which honors fighting. Yes, NHL hockey players are really good role models for kids -- if you want your kids to grow up as animals.

Just my thoughts.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi Joy,

Your comment reminds me of an incident which happened some years back. My brother was coaching a Little League Football team in the Florence area. He coached for five years -- and his team had the best WIN record of all the teams for the entire five years. Many of his players went on to do well in high school football -- because of the training, discipline, and winning spirit he taught them.

Yet, at a league meeting, some of the other coaches told him that he put too much emphasis on winning. Now, there are several reasons kids are encouraged to play sports: (1) to learn to be team players, i.e., to work well with others, (2) to keep them healthy through physical exercise and activities, and (3) to learn to be winners.

In professional sports, winning translates into revenue for the owners and larger salaries for the players -- so, winning is very important to both players and management. Given that, it is only natural to look for those players with the best athletic talent. If you had a professional basketball team and were going to add one more player to your team -- which would you choose: Kobe Bryant or Woody Allen?

And, if you were going to pay big dollars to see a team play; would you rather see a team of Kobe Bryants -- or a team of Woody Allens? Of course, if it is comedy you want, Woody is your man -- but, if it is good, professional basketball you want to watch, then your man is Kobe. Yes, athletic talents are very important -- but, even a team like the Lakers has to, very often, get back to the basics. Otherwise, they would not be a winning team. So, both talent and basics make the winning team -- and winning is what brings in the revenue -- which is the reason for the team existing.

Joy, you are very right; it is not about color of skin, or race -- it is about talent; which should always be the deciding factor.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

It was created because women of color were not allowed in the Miss American Pageant. I understand why it was created but their rules need to change if they are don't allow all women.

I did look at their website and I did not see where it said one had to be black. It states

"Founded in 1968 by J. Morris Anderson, the Miss Black America system was developed to reverse the negative propaganda of the Black woman and her role in America. Today, as our nation embraces Black beauty, we remain ever committed to the empowerment of women of color throughout America, representing all of our sisters of the African Diaspora.

It is with great enthusiasm that we launch "The Rebirth" of our pageant system, with all of its grace and opulence from years past. We encourage all young women, between the ages of 13-29 to join us as we continue the legacy ... and DARE TO BE."

So hopefully they have decided to keep their name but allow all women/girls to have a chance.

For the record I do not and will not support anything or anyone that limits participation based on race. I also could not tell you who any of the winners are and even when the event takes place.
Where did I make an excuse? Saying I understand why something was created is not making an excuse. I know why the Negro Leagues were created is that making an excuse too.

You must have missed where I wrote

"I understand why it was created but their rules need to change if they are don't allow all women."

and

"

Please show my excuses.
I see what you wrote. I also see where you are always involved in racial issues. You are always promoting the black side of things.

The Pageant web site clearly states it is for blacks only. You become incompetent when it fits your agenda. I read you for what you are.

Go read the link I posted and I fully expect you to come back and make a post condemning this racist pageant.

Now, excuse me if you will, there is a good show coming on BET.

Hmmm...I don't recall any postings of yours about BET or The black pageant. I guess you only make posts when its negative for the whites.

Do you think it would be alright for Viacom to have an all white ball team?

Viacom Brands

Of course you can't find any because I have never made any. But since you cant recall, you can look into all my previous post and please find one racist comment. What you will find is where I have defended the right to fly the Con Fed Flag. You will find when I speak against Revs Sharpton and Jackson. You will see where I said people should control their speech about the Pres. (Pres Bush was in office at the time). So look all you wish and when you find one, just one let me know.

I don't care if Viacom or if this man has an all white team. I won't support it just like I don't support BET because it promotes nothing but negativity, well 98% of it.

You better tell preschool teachers that white is not a color. I have a few t-shirts that are white. Crayola makes a white crayon. Typing paper is white. Should I go on???

Actually the subject is the basketball league. You went off subject and brought up the pageant.

Also as further look into the site, I see "Official At Large States" There I see Puerto Rico. (I know it is not a state) Puerto Ricians are not black and are eligible. Have any white women applied and been denied?

Again apply and if denied I will support you 100%.

Yes I work with white and black people every day. I can say I have never worked with a gray person

You know what, I like you. You sit there and call me a racist and can provide not one piece of proof. You say I defend a racist pageant, and you have not shown where once I defended their policies or it for that matter.

You say all my post are negatively towards whites and yet you have not shown any proof.

Again feel free to view all my previous post. Please post any racist comments I have made. There are 113 pages of post to choose from.

You know they say the ones that screams someone is racist is usually the true racist. That's what they say not me. Could it be true????

Yes I think white is a color. If the rules say you must be of color then all colors should be able to compete.

So for the 5th time (I think) apply and if they reject you based on color, I will support you 100%. I can't say it any simpler.

Of course you have to be BLACK...that's why they call it the BLACK Miss America Pageant. I wonder why they don't call it the Black Miss African American Pageant...??? Since the Miss America Pageant has been integrated for decades, perhaps the racial pageant has outlived its usefulness.
While leading my fire team on patrol, we came to an irrigation canal. The point man, a tall African-American, jumped across it. I saw there was no way I could do that and proceeded to wade across it.

“White men can’t jump,” he said jokingly.

Waist deep in water, says I grinning, “Black men can’t swim.”

We had a good laugh and moved on with the mission.
