India is preparing for Barack Obama's first visit to the country by removing coconuts from palm trees in Mumbai to protect the US president.

I guess after his "shellacking" Tuesday no one wants to take a chance on a coconut falling on his head. I do have to wonder though if 34 warships (including an aircraft carrier), a 40 car convoy, 3,000 security men, and 13 heavy lift aircraft at a cost of over $200 million a day is a little bit of overkill.

I guess this is a sign of the "respect"....hahaha....that all of the countries over there now have for us. I bet they would not have taken down any coconuts for GW....lol.

This just keeps getting better. You could not write a better comedy act if you tried. I once thought Danzell Washington would play "O" in the movie, but now I am more inclined to think Jerry Lewis may be up for the part.

Barss notes that a coconut palm tree commonly reaches 25 meters in height, that a coconut can weigh two kilograms or more, and that a two-kilogram coconut falling 25 meters would have a velocity of 80 kilometers per hour on impact and a force of as much as 1,000 kilograms. Several victims suffered fractured skulls, were rendered comatose, etc.

And that was before Obama got hit with a coconut.
Besides using about 10 percent of the US fleet to guard him at Mumbai, I see the US Army will build an air-conditioned 1 kilometer long tunnel so Obama may visit the Ghandi museum.

More, and more, the Obama administration resembles the Louis XVI court. Michelle even has her little play farm, just like Marie Antoinette. Dammed if I'll listen to a woman with thunder thighs and an extra wide rear end preach to me about nutrition.

ABC News Report

The Pentagon did not mince words in dismissing as “absolutely absurd” and “comical” media reports from Indian news outlets that the US Navy was sending 34 warships off the coast of Mumbai as part of the security preparations for President Obama’s upcoming trip to India.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell:

quote:
I will take the liberty this time of dismissing as absolutely absurd this notion that somehow we were deploying 10 percent of the Navy -- some 34 ships and an aircraft carrier -- in support of the president's trip to Asia.

This highly doubtful claim originated with one Indian news agency quoting an anonymous source in Mumbai. The White House says it is "wildly exaggerated," and there’s no evidence to support such a huge figure.

quote:
Matt Lehrich, White House Office of Media Affairs: The numbers reported in this article have no basis in reality. Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it’s safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated.

quote:
This story has spread rapidly among the president’s critics, but there is simply no evidence to support it. And common sense should lead anyone to doubt it. For example, the entire U.S. war effort in Afghanistan currently costs less than that — about $5.7 billion per month, according to the Congressional Research Service, or roughly $190 million per day. How could a peaceful state visit cost more than a war?

quote:
The hard-to-swallow claim originated with a Nov. 2 Press Trust of India article quoting an unnamed "top official" in the government of Maharashtra (one of India’s states)....

Nevertheless, the story was widely repeated without any additional reporting. Soon after the article was released, The Drudge Report — a news aggregation website — linked to the Press Trust of India article, with the headline "REPORT: US to spend $200 million per day on Obama’s Mumbai visit…" Later that day, Rush Limbaugh claimed on his radio show that "Five hundred seven rooms at the Taj Mahal, 40 airplanes, $200 million a day this nation will spend on Obama’s trip to India." He repeats the "$200 million a day" claim several times throughout the show without specifying its source.
dolomite,

I suspect DoD is being a bit disingenuous. For another source, I read the USS Peleliu, an aircraft carrier, is mentioned.

http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai...in-on-mumbai_1461911

Strictly speaking, the US Navy refers to the Peleliu as an amphibious assault ship. She weighs in at about 40,000 tons. She carries Harrier jump jets (to be replace by F-35Bs), plus attack and utility helicopters and a marine complement. At present, she’s in the area.

US carriers are actually referred to as super carriers and weigh in at 100,000 tons. Most nations use much smaller 40,000 to 60,000 carriers.

I see the disposition of two US super carriers groups, including the Harry Truman and the Abraham Lincoln, formerly in the Arabian sea, just dropped off the Navy website as of 2 November.

The Arabian Sea is on India's West Coast and Iran is sort-of next door. I can see the legitimate need to shift a carrier group to the east because of Iran's ballistic missile threat. I'm sure some of the accompanying escort ships would be packing the Aegis anti-missile system.
