My wife is 1/2 Cuban.

Her mother, 3 aunts, grandparents, and great-grandmother fled in 1959 when Castro took over.

Her grandmother was a chemist, taught at U. of Havannah. Her father was a physicist, also taught at U. of Havanna.

However, during the 1950's, he worked at the OAS in D.C. He saw the winds of change about 1957 taking root, and starting making plans to evacuate his family. Some, not all, left, so in effect, my wife still has distant relatives there.

They were forced to leave EVERYTHING. They lost the house, cars, clothes, all personal and household possessions. The pearl necklace and earrings she wore at our wedding was smuggled in her great-grandmother's clothes in which she sewn secret pockets. Those will pass down to my daughter.

Che' Guevarra or how ever you spell it personally was involved in getting rid of her family. Like most Communist dictators order and their evil henchmen do when totalitarianism takes effect, the upper/educated class are forced out, only the uneducated, sheeple masses remain (as they are easily brain-washed).

So, whenever my wife or in-laws see pics of people wearing Che' t-shirts, it makes their blood boil.

They are fully assimilated in American society. Only time I hear her mom and her aunts speak Spanish is when they get together, and that was only once. They speak perfect English now. Her grandfather knew that success in this country was full assimilation (something illegal aliens do not intend to do and will not do).

So, I doubt anything will happen on the in-law side of the house when Castro kicks the bucket, other than great, that is nice.

I can relate to this post, one of my bosses is Cuban, and VERY VERY educated, and I work with a few more from Cuba... all of them are very smart people, and I have utmost respect for them. Only one of them is still having problems with the English language, but he is doing great and trying so hard.
