Park Forest police officer Craig Taylor, accused of bean-bagging an irate, confused, knife-wielding 95-year-old man to death in his nursing home, has been found not guilty of reckless conduct charges.

“There was nothing criminal about his actions,” said Cook County Associate Judge Luciano Panici in his ruling Wednesday.

Taylor, 43, bowed his head, then hugged his wife. Both were in tears. Wrana’s family also wept and embraced as the verdict was announced. The Associated Press reports that the courtroom was filled with Taylor’s fellow officers.

Taylor was charged with reckless conduct in John Wrana Jr.’s death. Wrana, a World War II veteran, was refusing to leave his room at the Victory Centre for Assisted Living for a trip to a hospital when Taylor and four other Park Forest police officers confronted him. They were wearing protective vests and shields. Taylor shot Wrana, who was waving a knife and a cane, with five beanbag rounds. Wrana died of internal bleeding due to injuries he suffered when the beanbags struck the old man in the abdomen.

An Illinois State Police investigation determined that Wrana, who couldn’t get around without the aid of a cane or walker, was tasered and then shot with beanbag rounds five times at close range as police rushed him behind a riot shield. Wrana was wielding a cane, a small knife and a 2-foot-long shoehorn. Wrana died the next day at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez decried the ruling, calling Taylor’s actions “reckless,” reports Tribune Media.

“I really think other actions could have been taken and more restraint shown,” Alvarez said.

Taylor would have faced up to three years in prison had he been convicted. He still faces a multimillion-dollar wrongful-death lawsuit by Wrana’s family. He’s been on desk duty since the charges were filed. His lawyer told reporters he would return to patrol soon.

I'm sure the 96 year old nursing home resident was a fearful sight to the cops.

Readers have known for some time now that Wrana, two weeks shy of his 96th birthday, used a cane, had a walker in his room, and stood only 5 feet 5 inches tall. What we learned in court Wednesday was that the police who rushed him in his room at the Victory Centre assisted living facility in Park Forest were comparative giants.

One, Charlie Hoskins, stands 6-foot-4 and weights 320 pounds. Another, Cpl. Lloyd Elliot, is 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds. A third, Mitchell Greer, is 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds. And the smallest among the officers there that night, Taylor, the one armed with the shotgun, is also muscled up.

That's a lot of beef coming at an old man in a narrow space.

The commander of the crew, Michael Baugh, hasn't testified, but he was the one at the front of "stack" formation holding the heavy police battle shield.

All they needed was that shield, really, Murphy testified. "All he had to do was lift it up," Murphy said. "Lift it up and push."

A mattress could have worked just as well, he said. It wouldn't have been as dangerous as firing high speed projectiles into an old man's guts from a 12-gauge Mossberg pump shotgun.

What is there to hop on? A 95 year old man, 5 young able bodied cops in order to subdue him had to use bean bags and a taser. After the local police and prosecutors did their investigation, there was no doubt that they did what they had to do.

Yes jt, especially since he was on drugs and ran for over 20 miles in a car without any regard at all for other's safety. Oh wait, no he didn't. He was only 96, why didn't he take them all on? THIS is what should upset you, instead of criminals killed while resisting arrest or running from the cops instead of just stopping. The left whines about 'black lives matter', well not the black lives taken by other blacks, and ignore the white lives, especially the white lives taken by black cops. Stupid freaking liberals.
