There have been a bunch of Backyard Burger franchise locations go belly up because their gross sales/income didn't match their rent factor.

Every few years, DQ goes to to their franchise owners and tell them it's time to upgrade to our "new format."  It's a shame, as most of the owners have just got their last "upgrade" paid for.  They really don't want to go $1 million into debt to build the new Dairy Queen.  This go round, we see a completely new building in Lawrenceburg, but the rest of the area DQ's have been closed and the buildings abandoned or sold.

I had heard essentially the same thing from a former restaurant owner.   It does though seem that many of the owners who are not natural born Americans don't seem to be held to that requirement.  They did the same thing though to the Orange Julius restaurant in the mall.  The owner there was not able to upgrade and make the changes that the corporation demanded and had to relinquish their ownership.

Does make you wonder cause all the local ones (including Town Creek) used to seem to do good and then vanished.  Now word that a new one will open in the Back Yard Burger's building yet no indication of any work being done and that building looks nothing like the new concept buildings that DQ opens in.

So maybe the plan is to just bulldoze the existing building and start over with one of those compact small DQ/Orange Julius combo buildings like in Decatur or Athens.  Guess time will tell.

I don't know what the hold up is but from what all I can tell there is nothing being done at all to indicate that the Dairy Queen is actually going into the old Back Yard Burgers building other than what's been printed or what the Mayor has said in his email newsletter.  Guess time will tell but does make you wonder.
