I kept hearing that Dairy Queen was opening in the former Backyard Burgers building in August. Is this still happening? Not a thing has been done to the building or the property as far as I can tell.

The reason nobody stays at that location long is the rent. It's $6,000 a month. I don't see how anyone can make a profit there unless they are just swamped all the time(24/7).
Backyard Burgers was swamped when they were there. $6000
There have been a bunch of Backyard Burger franchise locations go belly up because their gross sales/income didn't match their rent factor.
Every few years, DQ goes to to their franchise owners and tell them it's time to upgrade to our "new format." It's a shame, as most of the owners have just got their last "upgrade" paid for. They really don't want to go $1 million into debt to build the new Dairy Queen. This go round, we see a completely new building in Lawrenceburg, but the rest of the area DQ's have been closed and the buildings abandoned or sold.
Last month passed a closed Backyard Burger in Cullman I ate at last year. Not a lot of them left. DQ rarely changes their menu. Too bad they force franchisees to change formats so often.
I had heard essentially the same thing from a former restaurant owner. It does though seem that many of the owners who are not natural born Americans don't seem to be held to that requirement. They did the same thing though to the Orange Julius restaurant in the mall. The owner there was not able to upgrade and make the changes that the corporation demanded and had to relinquish their ownership.
Does make you wonder cause all the local ones (including Town Creek) used to seem to do good and then vanished. Now word that a new one will open in the Back Yard Burger's building yet no indication of any work being done and that building looks nothing like the new concept buildings that DQ opens in.
So maybe the plan is to just bulldoze the existing building and start over with one of those compact small DQ/Orange Julius combo buildings like in Decatur or Athens. Guess time will tell.
Pretty sure DQ just started or is about to start a rather large renovation project.
I don't know what the hold up is but from what all I can tell there is nothing being done at all to indicate that the Dairy Queen is actually going into the old Back Yard Burgers building other than what's been printed or what the Mayor has said in his email newsletter. Guess time will tell but does make you wonder.
It is definitely happening, renovations must be made first.
Drove by yesterday and finally saw definitive evidence that something is being done what with construction trailer and workers on site, glad to see whatever held them up is now out of the way.
The City of Florence posted on Twitter that it had started.
I want one of those Dairy Queen Chips Ahoy "Blizzards" that Ken Hoffman, the fast food critic and "gastrointestinal crash test dummy", praised so unstintingly in his recent column.

while recently outta town, i believe i saw an 'orange julius' advertisement at a dairy queen? anyone else seen such?
here it is , listed on their website!
DQ ate up and purchased/acquired Orange Julius so now you'll see the two marketed together. i do miss the OJ that was in our mall here as they had good mixtures of each Julius and their seasoned fries & Hot dogs were great to.
