Representative Robert Cramer
2367 Rayburn House Office Building, U.S. House
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Cramer,

Apparently, the White House and Senate Republicans believe that American workers and our families should subsidize foreign workers and their families with our taxes. This is outrageous!

Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation has done an in-depth study on the costs of high-school-dropout households, which would dramatically increase under the new Bush/Republican Senator immigration proposal. The costs to Americans would be staggering.

Rector found that the share of federal, state and local costs for each of these high-school-dropout households is around \$43,000 a year.

But he subtracted out their share of defense and interest on debt, concluding that the incremental Federal, state, and local expenditures for each household is around \$32,000 a year in government support.

The Heritage Foundation scholar then painstakingly dug through government data to find every kind of tax that these households pay. He even included money spent on lottery tickets (an average \$686 per year) and excise taxes, as well as FICA and property taxes and many others.

He said he was a bit surprised to find that these high-school-dropout households pay more taxes than he expected - nearly \$10,000 a year.

Nonetheless, the bottom line is that these households require \$22,000 each year
in net taxpayer subsidies.

Rector's study indicates that these total households headed by foreign-born high school drop-outs are costing taxpayers a net of around:

\$100 BILLION a year

Nevertheless, the new White House/Republican Senator immigration plan would ensure that all the illegal aliens getting that subsidy would remain here to keep collecting ...

... and that we would add large numbers of new households every year so that the total subsidy could grow much larger.

In short, this proposal is an affront to every American taxpayer and should be stopped in its tracks.
Don't hesitate to call me,

P.S. This is more important for America than any war overseas !

I think the letter refers to this report published by the Heritage Foundation. http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/wm1076.cfm
The conclusions of the report point to a 103 million increase in US population under the proposed immigration reform.

Non English Speaking students do drop out of school at a higher rate than English Speakers. One possible solution to that problem is to teach English as a second language. That is costly, but it is less costly in the long run than providing public support to high school dropouts and their families.

Anecdotal evidence says that the children of immigrants are frequently superior students. So the conclusion that their drop out rate may well be premised on a failure to invest in teaching them English.

One major concern about Social Security Funding is the ratio between retired and active workers. Millions of new, foreign born workers would be a partial solution to that problem, especially if they received reasonable good wages for their work.

Legalizing workers raises their pay, and increases their compliance with tax laws.

I believe the report provides several good reasons for welcoming immigration, providing English language schooling, and investing in their welfare, at least temporarily to allow them to adjust to American Language and culture.

Not true. The reason illegal immigrants have jobs is because companies can pay them in cash and at very low rates. If you legalize the illegals, even more illegals will come across the borders, the ones who are made legal will lose their jobs to the new illegals, and those legalized immigrants will then be eligible for public welfare. Amnesty did not work in the 80's, it will not work now.

I agree Nash... this hurts us just as much as them coming across.

Amnesty in the 80's worked. I am acquainted with to many people it worked for to ever accept the assessment that it was a total failure. We should have learned some valuable lessons, one of which is we are not going to stem the flow, we should at least get hold of some control over it.

You are completely wrong. Part of the deal with providing amnesty in the 80's was that the border would be secured, more resources provided to border patrol, and illegal immigration would be reduced. This was a complete failure, the fact that illegal immigration has gotten even worse is proof that the amnesty in the 80's was a failure.

We can stem the flow of illegal immigration, it's very simple. Strictly enforce the laws we have in place and secure our borders. Make it impossible for an employer to hire an illegal without being penalized. Make it impossible for illegals to find anyone to sell or rent them a house. Allow prisons to deport inmates who are here illegally and allow police to arrest and deport anyone who cannot prove they are legal citizens. If the illegals find it impossible to live in our country, they'll be forced to either go back to theirs and change it or apply for citizenship the legal way.
