The sheriff’s deputy who failed to engage the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School “believed he did a good job” because he called in the location of the massacre and gave a description of the shooter, a top union official said Thursday.

School resource officer Scot Peterson, who resigned in disgrace from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was “distraught” about the shooting that killed 17 people — but believed he did his duty, according to the president of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association.

“He believed he did a good job calling in the location, setting up the perimeter and calling in the description (of Cruz),” said the union official, Jim Bell.

During a press conference, Peterson was lambasted by his sheriff, Scott Israel, for not engaging shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz last week as he slaughtered students and staff at Douglas High School in Parkland.

The union head said he didn’t want to second-guess Peterson — but strongly suggested that failing to take on Cruz was a mistake.

“We have to act, even if that means risking our lives to save many, many more lives. I would demand that from our union members,” said Bell, still a working deputy.

“You’re listening to an execution every time you hear the rifle shot.”

Sheriff Israel suspended Peterson without pay before the 33-year vet abruptly retired.

Peterson was not an association member, but sheriff’s brass asked Bell to contact him with the bad news.

Peterson had been the resource officer at Douglas High School since 2009 and made a base annual salary of $75,673.72 as of 2016, according to sheriff’s office records cited by the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.

That base salary, however, doesn’t include longevity and first-responder bonuses that probably brought Peterson’s non-overtime pay closer to $80,000, according to Bell.

Peterson’s pension will be 75 percent of the average of his top five earning years while on the job, the union head said.

I somehow believe this deputy is one of the extreme few that believes he did a good job.  I'm sure he has to reconcile his actions in some way because he has the rest of his life to live with the 17 lives that were taken.  Given the facts, there is no way he could have saved all of those 17 killed but chances are that he was in the position to save some of those that were killed and he will have to live with that for the rest of his days.

A TRAINED POLICE OFFICER couldn't do the job Republicans expect teachers to do... what kinda logic is that?

If a gunman can walk into a military base like Fort Hood with 100% of the populace 'highly trained" in firearms use, and still murder 13 people with a pistol, do you honestly think that 20% of teachers having a gun is going to stop the next killer who may have an AR-15?

Not one but four sheriff’s deputies hid behind cars instead of storming Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during last week’s school shooting, according to a new report.

Sources from Coral Springs Police Department tell CNN that when officers arrived on the scene, they were shocked to find three Broward County Sheriff’s deputies behind their cars with their weapons drawn.

The school’s armed resource officer, Deputy Scot Peterson was also outside — he resigned Thursday over his failure to act.

The cops entered the building to engage the shooter on their own, and then a new batch of Broward County deputies arrived, and two of those officers — plus an officer from Sunrise, Florida — joined the police inside the building, the sources said.

It’s unclear if the shooter was still inside at the time, CNN reports.

Bad blood has been brewing between the two law enforcement groups ever since the Feb. 14 massacre.

Coral Springs City Manager Mike Goodrum confronted Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel over the incident during a vigil the following day, saying injured kids could have been dying inside the building while the deputies held back, sources tell CNN.

And the next day, Coral Springs Police Chief Tony Pustizzi wrote in an internal memo:

“I understand that another agency has given the impression that it had provided the majority of the rescue efforts, and that the tremendous work of the Coral Springs Police and Fire Departments has not been recognized.”

“Please know that this issue will be addressed, and the truth will come out in time,” he added.

The Coral Springs officers’ experiences will be included in a new report coming out next week, according to the news site.

Affirmative action.

Uh, really? How's that?

The deputy was white and had been decorated just last year. He called in the info and waited for backup. It's only in Bruce Willis movies that a guy with a handgun can win against an assault rifle.

I'm curious about this too.

Eventually, there were four deputy cowering behind police cruisers.  In 1972, three Japanese Red Army terrorists, at the behest of Palestinian terrorists killed 26 and wounded 80 more at Lod Airport.  For decades, the Israelis military and police have used that scenario to train personnel -- typically, one man with a pistol is able to take out all three of the terrorists. The deputies were well trained professionals against one teenager with no professional training.

All citizens are covered by civil rights and affirmative action..

Affirmative Action is a program of positive action, undertaken with conviction and effort to overcome the present effects of past practices, policies, or barriers to equal employment opportunity and to achieve the full and fair participation of women, minorities and individuals with disabilities.

So which was the deputy? A woman? A minority? An individual with a disability?
