AS Jerry Clower says in his coon hunt story "Just shoot up here amongst us, one of us has got to have some relief", virtually anything done , at all, is a step up.

Chick, if we can just get the law enforcement in Sheffield to concentrate on crime, instead of spending all their time rootin' out druggies, and get the DA to actually prosecute chriminals instead of addicts, I think your problem of being on the streets after dark would go away.

I never quite understood what was wrong with a cop walking the beat.

________

if law enforcement would show their presence in Sheffield at night, people might feel safer. Problem is, I think they're afraid too.

Do you want to feel safe as if you were in a bullet proof bubble in Sheffield at night? I suggest you go spend a night downtown Chicago where they have considerably stricter gun laws (as if that works) and a police officer for every 10 patron. When you get back to Sheffield you will feel safe enough to sleep on the sidewalk all night.

_______

I have no desire to go to Chicago, same for Sheffield, which is my choice & my right.

And CCW means? I never mentioned the Ritz, neither did the article I gave the link for. You put a large crowd of people in a restaurant/bar where there's music/drinking, there will usually be trouble. The shootings/killings that have occurred in Sheffield were usually outside a bar where someone had to much to drink, drunk, or involved drugs. Can't remember the last time I've heard of anything like that happening in Florence, Tuscumbia,  or Muscle Shoals.

I never implied or said anyone was wrong for going to Sheffield at night, just that I would not.

Defiantly much worse places that Sheffield.  I'd go to downtown Sheffield without much cause for worry at all.  Now there are parts of Sheffield I wouldn't go to in the day - the area behind the armory in Baptist bottoms and there is a little sketchiness around 26th Street and Atlanta Avenue.  But overall If you are scared of Sheffield at night you just might want to stay in which lets face it you probably are anyway.

CCW means concealed carry weapons permit.  Ritz is in Sheffield and most functions are at night, which I believe you referenced as a dangerous time to be downtown.

I believe that there are less than desirable places in all four of the Quad-Cities and the counties as well. As to downtown Sheffield, I wouldn't mind being there after dark without a weapon because the police station is right there nearby. However sitting at red lights and stop signs on the way there after dark might be a good reason to have a weapon.

The Sheffield police are busy trying to set people up with DUI/PI charges. If the police do not harass the customers, then business owners might actually revitalize the downtown area.

As for being downtown Sheffield at night. Never had any trouble myself.  Sheffield feels like Mayberry in comparison to say Atlanta, San Francisco, or Chicago. I wish them luck

Exactly. If Sheffield is cleaned up, made into a nice looking town with nice restaurants to go to, nice places to enjoy music, maybe those creatures will go back into the hole they crawled out of.

That's worked in lots of places. Get rid of the blight and make it more 'people-friendly' and the critters tend to find somewhere else to hang out.

What the heck is a 'bleeth?'

My father grew up in Sheffield in the 20's and 30's, and he always said that Sheffield's the city that the Great Depression never left.  It's a city that's not really changed that much in the last 60 years visually.

Many of the middle class families' children went away to college and never came home.  Then the parents that retired from TVA, Ford and Reynolds died.

That's when the sons and daughters from Baptist Bottoms moved "across the tracks" because of cheap housing.

Both Sheffield and Tuscumbia have no reason to be separate, however neither city has anything to offer the other.  1st Baptist churches in both cities are prime examples that both cities are not holding their own--dying.  And things don't change very fast for 2 or our 4 incorporated cities.

Where is Baptist Bottoms? I think Tuscumbia is a very pretty town, most of it anyway.
