Have you ever driven past the campus of Calhoun Community College in Decatur or Wallace State Community College in Hanceville? I have and I often wonder why these campuses have newer and modern multi story buildings and Northwest - Shoals looks like something from the stone ages. I find the differences in the campuses and what courses they offer shocking.

If I had to identify a course which Northwest - Shoals offers, my first response would be nursing, because that is where my sister attended during the late 1970's and obtain her LPN training. I also know about the welding program because of what I have previously read in the Timesdaily. But because of the stagnant growth and conversion of the campus when compared to Calhoun, Wallace State, I can't help but wonder if the lack of expansion and growth is due to mismanagement within the administration of the Northwest - Shoals campus or the Shoals area is being punished because of the sins of our fathers and grandfathers who actively supported many of the labor unions.

Some of our community colleges offer the same generalized courses, however some specialize in subject manner.  NW Shoals in my mind is dominant in welding, nursing and HVAC courses, although they do have computer certifications. Hanceville is also very strong in medical courses, even though Decatur also has'em.  Decatur has robotics and airplane courses that are badly needed in the Huntsville job market.  But when it comes to buildings and facilities, it's politics.

Shoals' State Senator was in the Senate longer than any other, but he didn't bring the pork home.  Russellville's 4 lane hwy. from Decatur was finished 15 years before Hwy 157 from Cullman to Muscle Shoals was 4 laned.  Their State Senator shared the chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee every other year.  This was all political--poor representation and The Shoals may have not voted right.  NW Alabama was punished by the power brokers in Montgomery for years and years.  I can show you a 4 lane highway across the river from Scottsboro from nowhere to nowhere--and there's no people or even electricity in the area.  It's all politics, and those with the better politicians get the money.

Just look at the new interstate type of road that went by Red Bay, with all due respect to red bay that road serves no purpose other than Sen. Bedford getting the money for them. I was looking the road projections for 10 years from now and the highest car count for Florence traffic is around 65,000 while the highest count for Colbert county is under 40,000 cars per day and where are they pushing to build the new interstate, thru Colbert county. The numbers tell you where it should be built. The leaders of Florence and Lauderdale county set on their thumbs while Colbert county gets everything and Flo. & Laud. get nothing. Even with Greer Rogersville being the chairman of the transportation committee and with the large number of rep. and senators from laud. county, we still get nothing. Where is our interstate from I-65 that would bypass Athens, Rogersville and Killen, go thru Florence and into Mississippi, I could cut 30 minutes off of my daily commute each way going to Huntsville to work since they are no jobs Lauderdale cty.
