FLORENCE — A former music and youth minister of First United Methodist Church of Sheffield was arrested Monday, charged with second-degree sexual abuse and one-count of second-degree sodomy, officials said.

Oliver Brazelle, 79, 311 Meadow Hill Road, Sheffield, was arrested Monday afternoon by agents with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, officials said.

Authorities said Brazelle is accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy who was a member of his youth group at the church. The accusation is that the abuse took place in the mid-1990s.

According to the accusations, the sexual abuse occurred at Brazelle’s Shoals Creek residence on Lauderdale 322, near Happy Hollow.

ABI agent Brian Faulkner said Brazelle was arrested after an investigation by the ABI was concluded and the findings discussed with the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office.

“We approved the issuance of the arrest warrants (Monday) based on the probable cause of the investigation,” Lauderdale County Assistant District Attorney Will Powell said.

Sheffield police launched an investigation in July 2012 after church members contacted police in regards to accusations of child sexual abuse. Police said the investigation was put on hold a month later because the reported victims were unwilling to come forward.

ABI officials said Faulkner began his investigation in early December after the department was contacted by one reported victim who is now an adult.

“Officially, we never had a victim,” Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray said about the July investigation. “We talked to several people, but no one (came) forward.”

The chief said investigators interviewed several people during the probe.

“I’m glad someone finally stepped up,” Ray said. “Maybe this will bring others forward.”

Brazelle was terminated as music minister on July 27, 2012, by Billy Don Anderson, chairman of the church’s board of administrators, and Senior Pastor Zeke Haselden.

Police said Brazelle had not held youth minister duties at church for about 10 years.

“He was employed by the church and he was dismissed,” Anderson said. “Since the beginning, we moved quick to turn it over to the authorities.

“I am pleased with the way the church has handled this and supported each other, when this first surfaced,” Anderson said.

In an August 2012 letter written by Anderson to members of the church explaining Brazelle’s termination, he said the former youth director and music minister admitted to church officials that he had an inappropriate relationship with a younger member of the church.

Another letter released by Anderson during the initial probe, stated that in 2003, the United Methodist Church’s bishop restricted Brazelle from choir directorship with young people after he was accused of inappropriate sexual contact in the 1970s.

Second-degree sexual abuse is a Class C felony and is punishable by 1-10 years in prison. Second-degree sodomy is a Class B felony and carries a penalty of 2-20 years in prison.

Brazelle released from the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a bond of $45,000.

Hi all,

Just curious.  Why is a man of that age a Youth Minister?   It has been my experience through many years as a Christian, that a Youth Leader or Youth Pastor should be closer in age to the youths to whom he is ministering; so that they have more in common and the youth can better relate to him as he teaches them about God.

In churches I have known, the Youth Pastor plays basketball with the young people, goes on outings to the beach, goes hiking, etc., with the young people.  This guy looks like he would need a walker just to attend a youth function.

This would be my first question:  Why was a man in his late 70s a Youth Leader?  I love being around young people; but, I would never attempt to be a Youth Pastor.   Why did this man?  And, why was he allowed to do so?

But, until we really know the truth -- we should not be judging him in the news and on forums.  Let the proper authorities render judgment from a position of knowledge.,  Just my thoughts.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

There are many prominent Shoals citizens that were members of Oliver's choirs and the church's Boy Scout troop.  Oliver had been choir director as long as I can remember, and I'm 63 years old.   Oliver was young at heart, and always looked so young for his age.  And he was also one of the best, if not the best, choir director in all of the Shoals.  Sheffield 1st United Methodist was held together by his music ministry, when so many younger members could have gone to church elsewhere.

It's just another example that the people of the cloth are tugged at constantly, as the Devil is real.

This whole situation is hard to believe, and my departed parents and relatives that were close friends of Oliver would have been appalled at this situation.  You just never know.

Here, let me explain the article to you in simple words.  The article says that he was a "former music and youth minister".  This means that at some point before now he was a music minister, and at some point before now he was a youth minister.  It doesn't say when these two things occurred.  But the article also says he was fired as music minister in 2012.  It says nothing about being fired as youth minister.  This would lead us to conclude that he wasn't a youth minister recently.  This conclusion is further supported by the fact that the Methodist bishop had prohibited him from conducting the youth choir in 2003.  Again, nothing is said about his youth ministry, so we can safely assume that even before 2003 he was no longer a youth minister.

Your second point made me laugh out loud.  He looks quite a bit younger than you, Bill.  Are you using a walker?

________

I laughed when Bill ask why a man of that age was a Youth Minister. You think maybe he didn't read it all or his old age keeps him from comprehending what he's reading?
