Why do they need to do an autopsy? It's pretty obvious what killed the boy.

(Reuters) - A 4-year-old boy died when he was visiting the a Texas cemetery with his family and a nearly 100-year-old headstone fell over and struck him in the head, authorities said.

The child, whose named was not released, was brought to the Odessa Regional Medical Center on Friday where he was pronounced dead, Corporal Steve LeSueur, a spokesman for the Odessa, Texas, Police Department said on Saturday.

An autopsy will be performed on the child by authorities in Tarrant County, LeSueur said.

I too think that your question is legitimate, but I can tell you from experience that the reason there was an "autopsy" is for the very reason that BW spoke. Any type there is an accident, that may involve some form of charges against an individual or party, the coroner or the DA will usually ask for an "autopsy".  bear in mind the media is reporting "autopsy", but in reality it may just be an examination to legally document the injuries sustained by the party so that if a trial comes, there will be legal evidence to the extent of the injuries which were received.  This may be only an external investigation, and may not constitute the complete "autopsy" that we are most familiar with. In the Amtrak crash into Bayou Canot there were multiple deaths, but only a few true autopsies were performed, for this very reason.

The closest thing I remember from a recent history was the young child killed in the airport in Birmingham when a large electronic sign fell on him.  They were traveling thru Birmingham after being at the beach for a week.  Tragic, and after the accident fingers were pointed in every direction. The sign was never adequately secured to the wall.

Ah... I didn't even think of that. Makes sense to me. Legalities.
