John C. Frierson, polyanna. If he was being offered a job by another paper, he would deny it to the hilt in case the other job offer fell through. That's just the way it has to be because your current employer won't take "no comment" for an answer if he is paying you 4 or 5 million a year.

You don't tell your current employer that you are planning on leaving for somewhere else. That's just not smart. What do those journalists expect him to say when they ask him in the middle of the Dolphin's season if he is going to leave? They're just baffled that someone would leave a pro team in the superior city of Miami for a college team in the inferior state of Alabama. It's typical snobbery from the southern most Northern state. Screw the Dolphins, the NFL and the ignorant Miami sports writers.
I may be wrong, but I really feel that Coach Saban meant what he said about turning down the Alabama job. It was only after the Dolphins's season was over that he actually showed interest--and even then, I feel that he looked at his family first before making the decision. Some coaches--and people, for that matter--are just better suited to a life in a small town college setting.

Nash and themax is right, he maybe was playing the money game, but he probably had OBLIGATIONS to finish. To keep a good name, you don't just walk away, you do it with class. If he had of just walked, his reputation would have taken a hit. Bama dont need that, and neither does Saban.. I bet the Dolphins knew he was taking the job, but also knew he was going to keep his good name by seeing the season through.

All my bets are on the fact that they DID know he was going to take it and made an agreement with him as to the date it could be published in the news.

They arent dummies, they know what they are doing, and they have the money to do it...it just GAGS me though to see one man make so much money at a University, when there are kids out here literally starving for an education and cannot even afford the tuition... now THAT is something that the American Public should pounce on.

There ya go... THAT is exactly the problem the Tide faces!!!!!! I think Saban may be work about 100,000 a year though.

You know, now that all this has come up, just HOW much does the other College coaches make??? I know Saban is billed the highest, but on an average, does ANYONE know how much they make???? Now I am curious, lol
Ever been to South Florida? Thats what it means. I've never seen as many gated communitys. 24 hour manned guard house, some even have it's own Dr.s office plus resturant, grocery store, post office besides the roving guard service, not the guy in the guard house. Wow, it's like a prison that people try to break into. Oh I forgot the fully equipted gym and full time trainer.

#1- Ubermensch was only making a light hearted joke
#2- Bold-face lie, the biggest one I can think of is "Untill death do us part" maybe it should be - or until I find a sugerdaddy who gives me money and clothes and jewerly while his wife washes his clothes and feeds the kids. LOL

Perhaps that money should be used for education. However, that money (or the vast vast majority of it) does not come from the budget that the University gets from the state. It comes from private boosters, and from the athletic program. The athletic program (at least football)is self sufficient. It is a business.

What bothers me is that many of the same people who consistently vote down property tax increases are screaming for the money paid to the alabama coach to go to "education."

Let's not forget that money generated by the sale of alabama merchandise goes to education. And also don't forget that this whole mess generated at least Saban's first year salary in free publicity.
all this babbling is just fluff, hot air, a rant.

its not about miami or tuscaloosa. its about nick and where he wanted to coach. i don't blame him. its his business where he wants to work. yeah he said he wasn't leaving, but what did you expect him to say? he said the same thing when left LSU. and the press? they took his words literally. fans usually don't handle rejection well and they tend to take things personally.

as far as the players, coaching at the college level is much easier, less headache, we all know that. ask a head coach in the NFL about dealing with pro agents and trying to get a player to conform. and no salary caps etc.

in college the coach has much more leverage on the player. he can do things his way. i'm a bama fan, but they (the AD and powers that be) have got a huge problem. unreal expectations and bias. its killing us. nick is a great coach and if they're smart, they'll leave him alone and let him do his job.

So true, so true. Coach Saban must be allowed to coach the team and run the program the way he sees fit. I am a bama fan and I believe that the roots of some of the problems with the program are the so called "powers that be." They (most likely Perkins, Neighbors, and Bryant Jr.) think they should have some sort of say in the way the program is run. Saban needs to run it his own way to be successful. I am so tired of hearing about how great Bear Bryant was. Of course, no one can dispute that, but the man has been dead for over 20 years, and Bama has hardly gotten off the ground during that time because everyone has to live up to the standard that Bryant set. Well folks, that is not achievable any more. The rules of the game are different and Alabama should be happy with a shot at the SEC West title every year and a NC ever 10 years or so.
