Kudos to Republican Justices Tom Woodall and Champ Lyons for putting party politics aside in the 2010 elections. Both men are backing the Democratic candidates for Alabama Supreme Court this year even as Republican Chairman Mike Hubbard makes threatening remarks about the justices. Hubbard hints that punishment for the justices might be in order by bringing up former state Sen. Harri Anne Smith who was barred from running as a Republican after backing Democrat Bobby Bright two years ago.

Justice Lyons: “My first loyalty is to the Alabama Supreme Court. If that were a crime, I’d have to plead guilty to it. ... We’ve got two extremely qualified Democrats running for the Alabama Supreme Court.”

Justice Woodall: “I put the quality of the people who serve on the Supreme Court above partisan politics."
