Yeah... I was expecting this thread when I got home. As for what has changed other than the letter after his name, nothing. He did not magically become a conservative, grow horns, or anything else for that matter. He's the same guy he was six months ago, but boy howdy, that "letter" change is all that counts to some folks.
I guess his staff was probably much more liberal than him, but as long as he was still technically a Democrat, they felt there was at least a chance of him voting for some of the legislation they'd like to see. If they had the same political views of Griffith, they would have had just as easy a time switching sides as he did, or they would have already been Republicans.

And yeah, dolemitejb, that's about right. Other people can be more ideological, but a politician's first interest is always himself.
I still feel that Griffith changed parties after he set in on enough "closed door" private meetings and saw/observed activities that were contrary to the Constitution and he didn't want to be a part of it. I think he made a wise and great decision as come November, if the Democrats leadership (Obama, Reid, and Pelosi) doesn't wise up and realize who they are there representing then many more Democrats will either switch parties or find themselves out of office as their leadership marches off the cliff with them lock step behind them. Many hard core Democrats are seeing a party that has left them behind and if they can't trust them on one thing how many other things can they not trust them on?

I voted Democratic in the last election, I voted for Griffith and like Mr. Griffith I changed from Independent to "ABD" Anything but Democrat. The current Democratic party and leaders are dangerous to our freedoms and more should wake up and see it also.

I guess it's fine to hold that opinion, and it can't be disproven, but I think you're giving him way too much credit for a politician.

You may not be giving him enough. How often do you see someone leave the party in power for the party OUT of power? That's a strong statement as to what he witnessed as a congressman.

Alabama still elects many Democrats despite being a Republican safe-haven in presidential races. In other words, we're a "conservative" state with two minimally different parties. The more likely scenario is that he's jumping ship because he can vote the same, but got a better deal from the Republicans. What that deal is, I don't know.

I believe he didn't like sleeping in a dirty bed.
