Pillar of Fire concludes its fifth annual Halloween celebration tonight with a special edition of the free film series “The Screening Room: Classics, Crowd-Pleasers and Neglected Gems.”

The 1963 haunted-house chiller THE HAUNTING will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, 350 N. Wood Ave., downtown Florence.

Based on Shirley Jackson’s literary classic THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, The film was directed by Robert Wise (CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, THE BODY SNATCHER, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL) and stars Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn. (Important note: This is the original screen version of Jackson's ghost story, not the horrendous 1999 remake with Lili Taylor, Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Owen Wilson.)

“The Screening Room” is an ongoing film series co-sponsored by the library and Pillar of Fire.

Thanks to everyone who supported the UNA Distinguished Events/Pillar of Fire collaboration on the two Norman Lloyd events this week. It was a rare and unforgettable experience and a marvelous early 94th birthday celebration for Mr. Lloyd, who returned to Los Angeles a very happy man.

Thanks again,
Terry Pace
