What a blessing ALDI'S has been to our community. Yes it is not the brands we normally use BUT I have found that they are just as good if not better. For instance check out thier brand of Velvetta Cheese. It is much softer and creamer than the other. Also thier frozen chicken breast are just as good as the others. SO? Those who want to whine and complain about paying .25 to get a buggy but you get that back, Just head on to Wal-Mart and waste your money.

What is the new policy at Walmart?  Early on, if they did not have the specific brand on sale in the ad of another store, they would substitute their Great Value product brand.  Then they stopped doing that.  They also got really picky about the meat ads having something to do with "USDA inspected" and "heavy western" junk.  They got really hard to do business with.

I agree.  All of the "hype" about how much would be saved had me and the wife visit the place about a month ago.

We had out quarter and left over plastic bags from other stores ready and proceeded in anticipation of great savings.

We had our "list" as we were told it was impossible to "shop" there without one.

Guess what?

Make all the "lists" you want, it is anyone's guess if they have the things you want to buy on it!

NO SELECTION and what is there is very suspicious as to quality.  And be sure to check expiration dates.

We were going to get some lunch meat and there was only one brand.  We picked up one package that had an expiration date in one month.

I don't really think any diety provided a "blessing" in the placement of an Aldi's in Florence.

I am originally from Florida and have shopped at Publix all of my life, there stores are spotless and the variety and service is excellent. There are a couple of catches though! Publix is mostly marketed to the young proffessional crowd, minorities and senior citizens will quickly discover that the stores are not designed for them. Prices are high to keep them out! Still if you appreciate great service then you will spend your money there as I have done most of my life.

Prices indeed are high at Publix most of the time, but they do have some great sales on some items and you can do well by checking those out. Sometimes they have unadvertised sales on items, and you will not learn of those unless you visit the store.  Conclusion: Publix should not be your only grocery store. Wise shoppers will check out their sales, both those advertised and those "in-store" only and take advantage of them. Then fill out your food needs elsewhere, like at Aldi where prices are generally lower and store brands are excellent.

Publix also routinely carries many items that are simply not available at the supermarkets in this area or that are only sporadically available.  Examples are leg of lamb, soy-based ice cream, and numerous products for those who are lactose-intolerant or gluten-intolerant.  Also, Publix has excellent produce.  Perhaps the competition from Publix will encourage other local supermarkets to expand some of their offerings.

Welcome to Florence, Publix!

How long were you hoping to hang on to that lunch meat? Three months? A full anniversary?

Aldi's is designed on a European model.  They don't have a selection of brands, just one choice of anything.  All of their brands are supposedly high quality, and while many of them are not familiar in our area, I understand that they are name brands somewhere.  I tried shopping there when I had kids at home, but they lacked any family sizes1 products.  Now that we are empty-nesters, I will give them another shot.

Publix is supposed to have basics for less, and a lot of high end/high price stuff.  I can't wait to have a real grocery store in the area.

You could always 1/2 the package and freeze part of it until you needed it.

I shopped in Publix while in Orange Beach a few weeks ago.  Where here the grocery store might have two or three items by one brand, Publix had numerous.  I told my wife several times that I didn't know "insert brand" had so many different things to offer.  They don't offer them up here.  I did notice they had a lot of sale items and BOGO on a lot as well. I look foward to it opening.
