How about that!

That goes down as one several "immaculate receptions" in college football beginning with Doug Flute, playing for Boston College threw a "Hail Mary" which was caught in the end zone and beat Miami [FL].

In 2010, Cam threw one against USCarolina either during the regular season or in the SEC Championship...AU played USC twice that year.  The Old Ball Coach just shook his head and looked away.

But my favorite Immaculate Reception was one caught by a Bama player...Prothro I think is how is name is spelled.  He was falling backward in the endzone, a defender face to face with him when Prothro put his arms around the defender and caught the ball behind his back.  Unbelieveable!

This has been a good rabbit season for AU.  But with the big hunt coming up, i hope they're not out of rabbits.

This will be the best IB ever as far as evenly matched teams.  What a year it has been for both teams.  One holding on to #1 throughout the season [beating LSU] while the other climbed up from the unranked to the top 10 [5 maybe?].   Dam!  State pride, much?

Happy Thanksgiving and Roll Tide to you Bammafans.  See you on the 30th.

Thanks for the posting, Best.

As deviney inspired as these passes seemed to me, none of them can be accurately defined as an "Immaculate Reception."  Contendah, you are right.  It stands in a class by itself, but not with the game you reference.  That describes a singular play in the NFL/AFL.  I apologize for mixing my metaphors leading to this confusion.  I take the blame for misleading you, but I honestly thought a football fan would have "caught" that.  j/k

However, at least 3 of the plays...BC/UM, AU/USC, and AU/UGA are by definition "Hail Marys" which according to Wiki is a phrase which has been around since the 1930's at of all places Notre Dame but popularized much later by a pass thrown by Roger Staubach of the Dallas Cowboys.

BC and AU/USC were thrown in a heavily defended endzone.  BC at the end of the game and AU at the end of the second half.  I can't remember if the pass was tipped before the BC receiver caught it but I'm pretty sure the AU receiver caught his cleanly because the USC defender jumped too soon.  Another difference was BC was going for the win.  AU was just piling on points during the SEC championship.   So not all Hail Mary's are thrown in desperation like AU/UGA

In the AU/UGA game, 4th and 18, some 75 yards from the endzone with 25 seconds to play and coming from behind throwing into double coverage sounds like Hail Mary time to me.

"Tip" or defected balls drills are part of all football practice...defense and offense.  And we as fans are surprised when we see it happen.

Yep.  Dawgone Defelction works for me.  Sure does.  Good one RB!

Back to Protho.  It wasn't a Hail Mary.  It's in a category of its own.

While you're perusing this list of Hail Mary passes thrown by collegiate and pro teams, note how few exceed the distance [and despiration] of the play Best posted.  And how many were deflected.
