There were many detractors that said Champy's would never make it where they located, in the old Campbells Restaurant building, over in Sheffield area.  Personally, my family and I, feel that they, along with Popeyes, have the best fried chicken for the Shoals area.  I have though noticed that the crowds seemed to have dropped off and you don't see them near as busy as they used to be.

I wonder if anyone else has noticed this and what they attribute it to?  Was everyone right about location bring the major factor or does their food quality and taste trump the location issue?

We go to Champy's often. We love the food and the service. True, the crowd seems to have dropped off some but that seems to be true of other places we patronize. Economy? Could be. We have so many places to eat in this area that making the rounds for a variety takes time. We have retired and don't eat out like we used to....more time now for cooking at home. Closings and job losses is bound to contribute to the slow down.

I think Champy's has not met their sales potential because they're just a little expensive.  People also try to avoid the rough road.  Who wants to spend that much money in such a run down part of town?

Most traffic in the area is on Wilson Dam Road, Woodward Ave. and Avalon Ave--in nicer business districts.  High traffic is especially important in the restaurant business, as out of sight, out of mind.

So what is so run down? They are in the process of doing improvements along 2nd street in Sheffield. Older area but it is mostly well kept.

Sit in Champy's and look across the street.  The whole area is unkept and somewhat distasteful.  I wouldn't put a business of any kind along that stretch of Second Street.

Let's just hope that removal of the concrete roadbed on Second Street is fast, because it will seriously affect Champy's business.  (Note: Second Street's the same rough road my father remembers back into the 1920's.)

These gentlemen made a serious investment to rebuild the Champy facility to meet their needs.  They would have made a better business decision had Champy's been located on one of the busier, more modern retailing areas.

Did these same gentlemen not say they were going to remodel the property across the street as well? I seem to remember an article about it in the TF. I could be wrong.

I can't say about upgrading the area around Champy's but I can say, without a doubt, that the same person that owns (and rents out the Champy's Building to the restaurant owners) Champy's also owns the building diagonally  across the street.  He (owner of the building itself) also owns several businesses around town but Champy's restaurant is not one of them.  The building that Champy's is in is leased out to the people that own and run Champy's.  The people that run Champy's were the prior owners of the local Lenny's.   The owner of the building also owns and runs the local Car Wash's that are in Florence and Muscle Shoals along with some of the local storage complexes.   So it would make sense if the same person was to develop the land across from Champys.

We frequent Champy's quite often and the place is almost always packed.  I think the only reason business may appear to be down is simply the weather.  When it's pretty and the patio is open with a band playing - it is standing room only.  As for the food... delish every time!  The chicken, livers, tamales, and appetizer are all A-1.  Keep up the good job!

Also of note, the area does seem to be improving, with exception of the road.  But seriously, we're not talking about a 100 mile long road trip on a sub-par road.  Come on people.  Can't you find more to complain about?

Have been to Champy's and chicken was a little too spicy for my wife and I. My comment here is: 2nd street has had the same bumps and cracks forever. They are not earth or teeth shattering. There are lots of streets in this area that a lot worsethan 2nd street. I drove over the speed limit on 2nd street when i was 14 and no license just like i do at 78. Just mark me as old and ugly.
