Testing for drugs, alcohol and smoking/using other tobacco products is another good idea. No druggie, alcohol user or smoker/tobacco user should be on assistance.
I agree with you to a point Best, but drug and alcohol testing or deadbeats would just be throwing more money up a wild hogs a s s. Why would anyone but an obuma voter object to someone getting off of government assistance?
Why would drug and alcohol testing, or testing for tobacco, be throwing money away? To me, supporting those habits is throwing money away. Anyone that can afford to spend thousands a year on those and other unnecessary things sure don't need taxpayers money.
Because the test ain't free. I understand the fact that you don't want to support their habits, but the test would be nearly as expensive as just buying the dope and booze.
I like the approach taken in Maine. Although it might start off costing more, if what the article said is true then the benefits would far outweigh the cost.
The cost would be covered nicely by the millions of dollars that would be saved by tossing the abusers off the programs. There are other ways to save money too.
That's the whole point of testing, spend some, save a lot. Twelve months
later they can resign, after they are tested again. Those tests can pick up
things a year old.
Too, stop bringing in terrorists and putting them on public assistance, and stop paying for college for little jr terrorist. That might save a few million dollars not to mention lives!!!! Stop supporting illegals.

Feel good article for haters, but why don't they address the real welfare queens, the oil industry , the banking industry, and all the other corporations that get back millions of our tax dollars, while paying nothing in taxes. GE, Exxon, just to name a couple. However, these welfare recipients are chicken feed compared to some of the real leaches on our tab, namely Israel. Not only do we given them about $20B a year, but they expect us to wage whatever wars they want , damm the cost to us, the US citizen.
While I don't have much love at all for people who won't work, the ones who are non deserving are basically less than 10% (government estimates are more around 3%) which makes that 3% or 12% of our federal budget. I've said it before, picking fly chet outta pepper.

On TV now. Momma suing daughter for $2000.00 for bailing her out of jail. Daughter is a 'stay at home' mom to five kids, lives with the babie's daddy but they aren't married, and he is of all things, she claims, a social worker. Momma is 'disabled', she says, cause she has the 'beginning of arthritis. She gets a government check for that, but somehow is able to be a caregiver for her sister, clean and do stuff for her, and is paid by the government for that, and able to afford two grand to bail out daughter and has just done it for son. Talk about haters. What about people who hate us so much they lie, cheat, and scam us out of our money without a thought about it being wrong, and the haters that support them doing it?

The Npr link shows where most of the welfare people went, they simply went on federal disability. The report is scary relating to how many lower educated people of working age are on disability. This is one of the main things sucking SS dollars down for people who actually work.

I was discussing this with a customer, and they suggested let the one applying for/receiving the money pay for the tests. Goodness knows they have money for everything else.

You even read the NPR link Doctors est approx 50% of those of working age are scamming the system. I am mental if I think one of the men driving our crew bus who was so badly burned his fingers were burned off as was most of his nose goes to work so can someone with minor back pain etc. can? We have a guy flying with a artificial leg due to a motorcycle accident. As the article says 13k disability plus other things like SNAP, rent subsidies equals min wage or better and while not a great way to live many have decided its good enough. If I am not right why did so many drop SNAP just because of a requirement to do community service, job training or work for the assistance in Maine?
If you want to get my hackles up on disability in the U.S., start with why sex offenders automatically qualify because they are considered unemployable. Every other disability aside, this one is scary. Jails everywhere lament not having enough inmates to work on municipal projects. Yes, it would require a lot of supervision, but can't one supervisor watch five or six sex offenders? They do honest work, they get honest pay. If they can do better elsewhere, they aren't required to stay.
