This may not belong in the political forum but it's where I spend most of my time. I have an idea for a project and would like some feedback on the idea. According to statistics about 1 in 5 people in Alabama receive some sort of support. How many low income, disabled, or elderly people in our town are in need of nutritious food? Most can get food stamps but then must pay high prices at the store to buy questionable quality goods. Modify the Chinese proverb to read give a man a bag of food and feed him for a day, but teach him to farm and feed him for a lifetime.
Here is my draft idea. Find a land donor, be it the city or private in town. Through corporate and private donations work the land and plant a "feed the hungry" garden for needy citizens. Have a "work" day every Saturday during growing season to tend to the crops. Open the garden for anyone to use based on their needs. I believe most items could be secured through donations so the ROI for the community could be huge. I'm interested in your comments, questions, or ideas.
