This may not belong in the political forum but it's where I spend most of my time. I have an idea for a project and would like some feedback on the idea. According to statistics about 1 in 5 people in Alabama receive some sort of support. How many low income, disabled, or elderly people in our town are in need of nutritious food? Most can get food stamps but then must pay high prices at the store to buy questionable quality goods. Modify the Chinese proverb to read give a man a bag of food and feed him for a day, but teach him to farm and feed him for a lifetime.

Here is my draft idea. Find a land donor, be it the city or private in town. Through corporate and private donations work the land and plant a "feed the hungry" garden for needy citizens. Have a "work" day every Saturday during growing season to tend to the crops. Open the garden for anyone to use based on their needs. I believe most items could be secured through donations so the ROI for the community could be huge. I'm interested in your comments, questions, or ideas.

I think this would be a great idea, if people would actually get together and 'WORK' together
and not "gripe" together. We would know where our fresh fruits and veggies come from and they are free of pesticides and other things we don't want in our food. Only problem I have, is that I live in a small aprtment with practically no yard, and other than tomatoe plants, I have never planted and grown anything.....so would needs loooooots of teaching, but my two hands and back work are in it....count me in.

Good Lord, are you; ferrellj the head tea partier proposing a commune??????????? Confused Would this be construed by some to be COMMUNIST?????????? Confused
Not that it isn't an excellent idea.

No rocky, it means takin the spoon out of folks mouth and making them work for a new one.

Great idea Ferrell. I had a simialar idea I hope to get up and running one day. Instead of government housing, create low income housing for jobless folks, but they work at the establishment. They tend to their own matinence, lawn care, security, etc. If they aren't willing to work there then they can't live there. You have to give folks a sense of worth, not just give them something that's worth a little. Working for something makes it mean something to you.
and do all of this without gov't handouts. Someone who had land and could afford to start up the project, and the tenants would pay rent and work the land themselves. You could add to that your idea of the garden, and even livestock. But the issue would be, are folks really willing to have that responsibility on them, or do that like the gov't handouts without work so much they'd choose that instead?

Another excellent idea. Are you ALL closeted communist????? Confused
Of course there begs the question where the land would come from and if there would be any rules or regulations to be observed and who or how they would be enforced?????
Rocky... you are clueless man. lol

I've never once stated that communism is a bad concept on a small scale. As a matter of fact, I think the concept can be utilized well in small towns, or small areas where maybe extended families all live close together. However, you are confusing that for communism our primary economic system for the entire country. Very different things there... and I hope you understand that but you are just trying to throw some silly jabs out.

The land would be donated by an individual in a charitable manor that has nothing to do with the government. The tennants would WORK for their rent and food. Where the crap are you getting that we want communism for the entire country from that? You reachin hard there bro.

Once again, you miss the boat. The federal government FORCING folks to hand their hard earned money to them so that they can redistribute it as they see fit is socialism/communism.
what I'm talking about it freedom from the gov't to do with your money or land as you CHOOSE. If folks in a community CHOOSE this for themselves, then great. But the federal government mandating these types of policies nationwide is illegal and unconstitutional. Seriously... do you not see the point I'm making? Our founding fathers did not care what communities did, and they were HUGE on state rights. But the only way that stays solid is if the federal gov't doesnt overstep their bounds.
