Indeterminate article, not drawing very good conclusions.  If this passed an editor, both should be dismissed.

The TD  carried a similar article proving the writer requires a more comprehensive knowledge of math and statistics.

http://www.timesdaily.com/opin...28-c68dc95fc05a.html

The article states Alabama does not test well for the ACT test for college inferring more money and effort is required for education.

Then, makes the statement " Ours is one of only 13 states that test all public high school graduates, providing at least one free shot at the ACT for every student. The ACT is critical for college entrance and scholarship opportunities."  This indicates Alabama students are being compared against an average that includes a population of students who plan to go to college (the other 37 states) and a population of students are taking the test as its free.  A true comparison would compare Alabama against the other 12 states or against states with a similar percentage of students taking the test.

Otherwise, the conclusion is as ridiculous as giving a survey to a few dozen meteorologists.  Then, extrapolating their response as declaring that 97 or 98 percent of all scientists agree that man made global warning exists.

The man wrote from his heart and his experience, not form structured publication with its own editorial creeds. He did NOT address ACT scores in any way.

Yes, I know what you are trying to prove by your "similar article" claim, but I ain't buyin' it. The fact is that Alabama students continue to lag behind the national AVERAGES for students taking the ACT, as compared with either kind of test population you describe.

So, the first article was emotional propaganda!  Sorry excuse from a proper grammarian.

As to the second, you speak from actually reading such statistics, or from pulling it out of your duffel bag.

You are so-o-o selective with what you choose to respond to.   I said the man wrote from his heart AND HIS EXPERIENCE.  You ignored the latter. And besides that, it is altogether possible to speak with emotion and be dead right about that of which one speaks.

I gotcha numbers right heah!

Contenduhh,

I reviewed your link and stand by my statements.  The population of students in Alabama (allowed to take the ACT for free) is compared with the 12 other states that pay for their students to take the test and the 37 other states that require students to pay for the test. It is reasonable to assume that in those  37 states that mostly college bound students will pay to take the test.  Therefore, the statistics are not uniform due to kilter of the populations.

That said, education needs improvement in Alabama. The NEA/AEA has no vested interest in to improve student performance.  That is why I approved of competition, including charter schools

I believe we agree, just looking at the thing from different angles. My point--and I believe yours--is that Alabama students will, of course, do better when their scores are compared with the larger cohort (those in states that pay for all tests)  than in the smaller (in states where primarily college-bound students take the test). And both of us agree with the writer of the article I posted, that Alabama has much to do to get its public education program where it ought to be. But neither we nor he are resting that obvious conclusion on emotion.
