None of the towns are winners. They lack adequate public services and everything is done on the cheap with citizens expecting world class services. The towns are backwards provincial fiefdoms and they like it that way.

We sometimes don't have a choice where we live but I'm out of here when my responsibilities are completed.

I'm a realist, and don't expect world class public services.  We rather like our current property taxes--approximately one fourth that of surrounding states.  You pay for what you get when it comes to school funding.  And State politicians so far have stayed away from property taxes to fund this very poor state--the obvious place to acquire more money.

I love the area, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I wonder where this utopia is that all the whiners keep dreaming about? No matter the state, town, area, whatever, there are unhappy people.  There may be happy people in Atlanta and New York. I can't believe that, but could be.  Sheesh. But jj, do us a favor, keep running down the area and maybe it will stem the flow of yankees coming here. Talk about backwards! And when you go, take some with you.

As usual you launch into a ad hominem  attack on a post you don't agree with. My family settled in NW AL in the 1820s, I was born here, I own property here, I pay taxes here, I vote here and patronize local merchants and business here. All of that gives me the right to express my opinion on this area. You don't like my opinion, fine but I have given you no reason for your snarky reply. Grow up.

Snarky jj? Read your post. How about your childish/snarky attack on the area and the people?

"everything is done on the cheap with citizens expecting world class services. The towns are backwards provincial fiefdoms and they like it that way".

I have as much right as you to express my opinion of the area and I love it and the people. Grow up? Take your own advice. I am a grown up, and I know grown ups leave places that make them unhappy.

Is this the best you have?. If YOU will read my post  you will see that at this time I can't leave the area. Are you free to post your opinion? Of course you are but why do you couch your opposing view in snark and ad hominem attacks? Knowing your penchant for always having the last word I will turn it over to you. Rage on.

A dictionary? What has that got to do with anything? Love the way you just ignore parts of a post you don't like. Now one more time, pay attention now.I can not leave the area at this time.

The OP asked for opinions. I gave mine along with others. I respect their opinions, but for reasons known only to you, you feel the need to respond with name calling, snark and negative remarks which is not uncommon for you. Are you just a troll or related to Bill Gray?

You just can't do it can you? You have to have the last word in anything don't you? Now that I see your level of humor here you go.    Now you will attack me for this. Go ahead you know you have to. You can't help yourself.

Your shallow provincialism is flagrantly evident!  I have lived in Atlanta, as well as in two other large cities, Nashville and Washington D.C. Sure, there are people in all those cities who are unhappy, but I met many, many folks in all three locations who were very content with their situations-family, occupational and otherwise. To express disbelief that there could be happy people in New York or Atlanta just puts your small-minded, tunnel-vision view of the world on embarrassing display.

JJ, do you have ideas where you would like to live?

I think I would like living in New York, or Alaska.

If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I don't wanna go
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I'd just as soon stay home

I was one of the chosen few
To be born in Alabam
I'm just alike my daddy's son
I'm proud of who I am
I went through a lot of good women
And shook old Jim Beam's hand
If I never see the pearly gates
I've walked through the promised land

If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I don't wanna go
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I'd just as soon stay home
If they don't have a Grand Ole Opry
Like they do in Tennessee
Just send me to hell or New York City
It would be about the same to me

I've got wild honey trees and crazy little weeds
Growin around my shack
These dusty roads ain't streets of gold
But I'm a happy right where I'm at
All these pretty little southern belles
Are a country boy's dream
They ain't got wings or halos
But they sure look good to me

If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I don't wanna go
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I'd just as soon stay home
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I don't wanna go
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I'd just as soon stay home
If they don't have a Grand Ole Opry
Like they do in Tennessee
Just send me to hell or New York City
It would be about the same to me

If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I don't wanna go
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I'd just as soon stay home
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I don't wanna go
If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie
I'd just as soon stay home

I would like to live somewhere in the SW. I have always liked Flagstaff, AZ.

Haven't lived in Colbert Co. So, I don't know.

Started out in Florence. Family went "rural" when I was 12.

80 acres in the country.

Woods, fields, and a "spring" running through it.

I was in Heaven.

Explored every inch of it. Toting may trusty .22 Stevens. Catching crawdads. Seeing rabbits, quail, etc.

Moved back to Florence after marriage.

4 years later, went back "rural".

Raised my Kids rural. 20 some odd years.

Now, back in Florence.

Nice location. Surrounded by "woods". No subdivision for me.

Convenient to everything.

Eateries, shops, Dollar stores, Big Box stores.

Still, it's rather quiet.

I'm satisfied.
