PBA's Police State post reminded me of some parts of this documentary.

Do you really have to pay income taxes?

The answer: No.

Ah, that's the rub - define "fair" when it comes to taxes.

I've listened to the "flat tax rate" debate since the 1970s. Everyone is on the bandwagon when someone argues for a flat 15% (or pick whatever percentage) of income for a tax.

But... then comes the arguments about what is income (gross vs. net)? And that there are no deductions or exemptions ("whadya mean I can't deduct my mortgage?" "I have five kids, don't that count for something?")

Realistically - many of the people who advocate not paying taxes under the current scheme wouldn't pay under any scheme.

And to paraphrase The Bible -- render unto Washington what is Washington's. Big Grin

Just to clear things up Jagorham, the fair tax is completely different from the flat tax. The fair tax is based on a certain tax rate that is placed on the amount of goods you consume. There are no income taxes, social security and medicare taxes, and other taxes just a national sales tax.

Sorry, this is off topic, but Ya know, just this morning there was a guy that showed a group of us the bottom of his cigarette pack where the Fed, State, County and City tax stamps were there... he asked a simple question that no one could answer... if this tax was ALREADY on it, then how is it legal to charge it AGAIN at the register??? Anyone here know?

Cigarettes, like gasoline, are priced with the tax included. If you buy 5 gallons of gas for $2.00 a gallon, you pay $10.00 total. If you buy 2 packs of cigarettes at $2.50 a pack, then you pay $5.00 total. Any store who charges additional sales tax is over charging their customers.

That was what I thought also, until today... This person told us that every where he buys his cigarettes charges the Sales Taxes, EVERY place. And, like you, I thought that would be illegal, but all stores are doing it... I called my brother, and two more of my smoking friends, and they all said the same thing... Cigarettes that are 2.50 a pack, 4 packs would be 10 Bucks, or SHOULD be, but NO, when they check out, it is 10.85...

I sincerely believed that double taxing was illegal.

But the IRS does it too... they take money out of our checks, for Fed and State taxes... then every dollar we spend, they get more, then at the end of the year, IF you got back state tax, you have to pay Federal tax on your OVERPAYMENT on State tax... UGHHHHH, they literally get half of most everyone's money... UNLESS you are a BIG BUSINESS OWNER or a Millionaire.. then you have HUGE breaks.
Sales tax by law cannot be included in the price of any products and must be collected on the total amount of the sale. Notice I said "collected", not charged. Business only "collect" sales tax for the state/local government. In addition, business that sell tobacco products are required to be licensed by the Alabama ABC Board and have a Federal Stamp from the Federal Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms Agency. The city of Florence alone has a 10 cents per pack tax on smokes. Now you know why they're $4.00 a pack. Mad
