DirecTv is the worst! I have been with them for over 4 years and they are always having specials but since we have existing service they don't allow us to participate. So, my husband called and asked why and we got a free DVR... I LOVE my DVR. Another place that gets me ill is Verizon. Have you ever noticed how the cell phone providers cater to the new customers and give them crazy cheap deals on new phones but the people who have had service for 13 years have to pay more??? Makes no sense to me...
It never hurts to ask! I switched from AT&T GSM internet (it has a contract like a cell phone plan) to AT&T DSL. They were offering rebate specials if you were transferring from cable internet but I was getting charged an early termination fee. I kindly brought up the fact that I had been a customer for 5 years and that I have 3 lines on my plan. I also mentioned that I was staying with the company even though swapping to cable internet was an option.
Guess who got the $175 fee waved on top of getting the cable rebate? Smiler

If you've been with them for 4 years then you should be out of your contract. My experience with Direct is that once you're no longer under contract-they'll pretty much do anything for you.

not so... they act like they don't care if I am a customer or not...
At&t actually have a "Customer Retention Representative" that you get transfer if you ever mention that you can come out better if you break the contract and switch service. I had lost my call phone(dropped it in a place that couldn't be retrieved) and to replace the phone was going to be $345. I didn't have the phone for more than 2 months so I wasn't eligible for a upgrade. I told them that Verizon can give me what I needed, waive the setup fee and all I have to pay was the $275 for breaking At&T's Contract. After they switched me to the "Customer Retention Representative" I got the phone for the $99 dollars I originally paid for it.

Isn't Competition Great?
Yeah but sometimes you can get stuck in a contract after just trying something for a week or so. Then what? Heck my daughter sent away for something that was supposed to be 'absolutely free' to try.....and the company pulled money out of her account for 2 months straight, and she couldnt call the 1-800 number to get hold of them to cancel. She tried 4 times from 3 different phones within a week period. Meanwhile she got stuck with overdraft charges, etc.....
Bottom line is, as she learned, if they ask for your credit card number when you order.....its not going to be free at some point in the near future.
