Rick might as well take over the mayor position.  He has already taken over the park rangers, the dog shelter to boast his position and request for a $10,000.00 per year increase for the extra duties.  It would be nice if he could get a grip on the police dept. and straighten it out.  Hopefully the new mayor will sent rick on his way and we get someone decent and fair and has common sense.

I rarely hear any criticism of Chief Singleton. My business partner was a LEO for 30 years, some of which he spent in Florence. I specifically asked him once about Rick, and he replied they didn't come any better. No one is going to be universally loved, especially a police officer, but for every derogatory comment I hear about Rick, I hear 19 that praise him. After all, we could have Tony Logan...

I guess rick could be considered to be good to some people, but I know quite a few of the policemen and they don't think he is that great.  Of course they are very selective in who they tell that to, if they tell the wrong people word would get back to rick and they would be fired.  He is known for throwing people under the bus to make himself look good.  In yesterdays paper he talked about giving out all those parking ticket, made the city over $10,000.00 in fines.  I wonder if he has ordered tickets to be written for the high school games or is it just UNA that gets the tickets.  Instead of jumping on the write tickets campaign, he should be looking at how to solve the parking problem.  With the building of the new Hermitage rd bridge, I wonder if he though about suggesting that Hermitage from Royal av to Helton dr be made into a 3 lane dr. with the middle lane being a turning lane except for football nites when there could be 2 lanes going out and 1 lane coming in with parking on the side.  Better yet, make more parking lots in the front of the school, they would save money by not having to cut all that grass out front during growing season.  I really wish he would leave the UNA police alone and let them patrol UNA instead of getting them to patrol  for him.  I think UNA has enough crime to keep the UNA police busy.  But that is only my opinion and knowledge.

Hey jmmgj5, since we're now talking about it being Singleton's responsibility to pave over certain parts of the city to create more parking spaces, do you think he can get my neighbor to trim back the bushes around the front of his house? It looks like crap.

Pendleton will not run for mayor if he has any sense.  Thus Pendleton might very well run for mayor.

His rambling, inchoate, blithering dissertations from his Clowncil seat and his unremitting, inappropriate introduction of irrelevancies into Clowncil discussions ought to be enough to convince citizens of this city that they do not want Pendleton in ANY elected office!

Pendleton is constantly harping on his First Amendment right to freedom of speech, as though anyone was making any attempt to limit that right.  The fact is that, owing to the incompetent application of Robert's Rules of Order by the dithering Chairman, Barnhart, Pendleton gets away with discussing a lot of subject matter that is not a part of the issue before the council.  Members of the Clowncil do NOT have license to discuss any and everything they might wish to during discussion of agenda items.  They are supposed to confine themselves to the question under discussion.  At the end of the meeting, when Clowncil members are permitted to speak, there is no such limitation, and Pendleton should confine his diatribes to that part of the agenda.

Mickey Haddock has announced his intent to run for mayor.  Haddock is a level-headed guy who has a demonstrated history of high competence in public service.  I will wait and see who else might announce, but for now Haddock looks pretty good.

My dream that will never happen:

We to install a "City Manager" (CM) instead of a mayor.  In this kind of position, you hire an MBA with loads of experience in administration. That person runs the day-to-day business of the city.  The elected mayor cuts ribbons, kisses babies and is the official "face" of the city. The mayor will have a tie-breaking seat on the council and is paid a nominal salary for his part time position.  Say 30 to 50k.  The city supervisor is paid well over 100k.

The city council is charged with interviewing and hiring the city manager. The CM will have a contract that allows the city to fire him for misconduct and other things that are normally stipulated in a standard executive employment contract.

Such a position would turn this city into a metropolis and remove so much of the drama that issues from the council and mayor.

That way, we will have a proven leader who actually knows how to run a city like a business.

One can dream.

Rick certainly can't regulate parking, paving and redo streets, but he does have the authority to recommend a solulation to the proper authorities  to solve a parking problem.  He certainly makes recommendation when it comes to speed limits, cross walks at certain churches and other things.  But then there in no money to be made in providing additional parking and not writing tickets.  We beg people to come to games and to shop and eat and spend money in florence and when they do, we thank them with a parking ticket.  A little brain power use of florence city officials could solve this problem, but do we really want to solve the problem.
