American aid worker stricken with Ebola arrives in U.S. for treatment

ATLANTA (Reuters) - An American aid worker infected with the deadly Ebola virus while in Liberia was flown from West Africa to the United States on Saturday and taken to an Atlanta hospital for treatment in a special isolation unit.

A chartered medical aircraft carrying Dr. Kent Brantly touched down at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Georgia shortly before noon.

According to Shawn Moran, the vice president and spokesman for the National Border Patrol Council, scabies and lice are the two main infestations that his agents come across. He adds that chicken pox, measles, H1N1 and tuberculosis are also pretty common. Really, he says they see a whole gamete of diseases and that’s what his men are most concerned with.

We live in a world where a disease can travel from one side to the other in the matter of a few hours. We have an "open" border with Central Amercia which is rife with disease.  The "un"fortunate thing is that most of the more deadly highly transmissible ones tend to make the inidividual so sick so quickly that it usually will disrupt their travel plans.

Admittedly, the Ebola patient to Atlanta (Emory Medical Center) is a little disturbing to me since I know what a nightmare containment would be if someone mistakedly gets infected and goes home and does not report any symptoms, BUT if anyone knows what they are doing it is the CDC and I feel pretty secure that they can and will contain it.  PErhaps any insight they get from treating these pateients here might be good in case it does break thgouh to ths country.

Some of these diseases are things of our nightmares.

It was here many years ago including an event where a lot of infected monkeys were housed in a complex right outside DC in Reston Va. If you read the book the Hot Zone, and pay attention at the end, you will see the virus managed to cause at least one employee who was exposed to develop an immune reaction meaning it likely was transmitted via aerosal (breathing) in the virus.  Luckily this version was a form that has not to this time shown much in the way of human disease (Ebola Reston v.).  The CDC and USAMRD have been working with these agents since the 60's and are no closer to having a cure than when they started.

Let's hope the guy in NYC (who also came from West Africa) does not have it, too.

The man in the article is the one I was talking about, not the two in Atlanta. The two in Atlanta are already known to have it. My point was that if he (the one in NY) was tested to actually have it, would it be reported to the public.

Hope the disease doesn't emerge amongst the population here. However, with global travel, the odds are it will.  With our level of medical technology and use of quarantine and prophylaxis the spread should be contained.  In parts of Africa, the spread is beginning to resemble that of a major plague during the dark ages.

The spread of AIDS/HIV has a sad politically correct factor. If, medical personnel were allowed to use quarantine, sanitary methods and ban of foreigners with the disease at the start, it would never have been so wide spread.

The biggest lesson to be learned from the outbreak in Africa is that the pourous borders whcih seperates these countries has no respect for disease. Much like out border to the south these do nothing to halt the spread of disease and pestilence into a country. Central America and mexico are rife with similar types of ailments.  These viruses can and do mutate as well as jump species. Much like the stroy of the invasion in H.G Wells War of the Worlds....the tiniest microbe may be the downfall of all civilization.  Ebola is certainly containable, IF you recognize it and institute quarantine. However, if one of these viruses were to become an aeroslized agaent, then containment is much much more difficult if not downright impossible.

This lesson alone should be enough to get some form of border limits put into place IF this adminstration and the ones who follow it really our concerned with our safety.
