[QUOTE] A federal judge on Thursday ordered the City of New York to remedy years of discriminatory hiring in the Fire Department by giving hundreds of black and Latino applicants jobs, along with years of retroactive pay, and offering thousands of others some damages./QUOTE]

Am I missing something here? Jobs and money are being given to minorities that FAILED to pass an entrance exam over people that have passed the entrance exam. I saw a black firefighter last night on the news and he answered the problem right on the air. He said the problem is the disparity in the education levels of whites and blacks. So instead of just giving jobs to minorities that can't pass the test why not work with the education system and improve education so the minorities CAN pass the test.

i agree with that.

also, part of hte problem is that the majority of people trying to get into the career are white. if very few black people and latino people apply, and even fewer of those applicants are qualified, how can whitey be blamed for the ratio?
how many crackers apply, but are turned down for the same reasons? that part doesn't make the news.

if people will stop going out of their way to make race an issue, race will eventually stop being an issue. i don't care about the heritage or ancestry of a fire fighter. i care about whether or not they are trained well and are capable of saving my big fat butt.
