On one of the courses on Hilton Head Island claims to have 250 gators on the premises.
I believe it. Years ago, I'd heard [had no proof] that female gators would guard golf balls like it was their eggs. I googled it and was surprised to find this may be true.

The US 17 corridor from Savannah to Georgetown is covered up with gators. I counted a dozen or more at one time in the rice pond behind my house.
Talk about useless critters. In LA I saw people fishing with those things just a few yards away from them. We had a couple of them in Madison right by a shopping center. Most likely they're gone now.

Some snakes eat them thinking they're eggs.

Useless? How so, Best? The gator is an important element of the ecosystem.

I too have fished within a few yards of gators. Folks in Florida, Louisiana and other states where gators are common understand how to keep a respectable distance from them. They don't let themselves be unnecessarily terrorized by a nearby gator. They have more sense than that.

When people move to Florida to retire or relocate, they often buy home sites near a pond or canal where there are alligators. Sometimes these newbies are fascinated by the gators and will feed them, which is against the law http://www.sno-bird.com/dontfeed.htm and which makes the gators less wary than they otherwise would be. This has resulted in unforeseen consequences, such as having the family dog or cat becoming lunch for a roaming gator looking for a handout. When that happens, Maw and Paw demand that the state wildlife people remove the "horrid beast" that ate fluffy.
Great article about geezers golfing with gators:

Here ya go, Best. A good gator. Taken in a delta about 10 miles from my former home.
Funny too bud, the movie Lake Placid has been on about three times since yesterday. I know people live around them and think nothing of it. I couldn't. I didn't even like going to the shopping center near the two we had here.

I've not seen that movie, and maybe don't need to.
I've not gotten over Jaws. It's bad enough now when I'm wading the creek and underwater things bump into me. Back in the days before Jaws, I could wade a canal feeding a rice pond, see gators, and think nothing of it.
Contendah is absolutely right about not feeding the gators and them losing their natural fear of humans.
There was a gator attack a few years back at a recreational area called Short Stay. Rather than posting any pictures of that event, I'm providing the google link. A warning. Opening any link may lead to graphic pictures. The good news is the victim survived. Thank goodness for nurses who were there when he needed them most.

Jaws has been on for two or three days too, along with Jurassic Park.
Betty White feeds a blindfolded cow to the gator in Lake Placid. That was some funny casting.

I think everyone knows that, and it goes for more than gators. People still do it though. Can't imagine wanting to feed a gator. I can't figure what kind of an idiot would play golf near the things, and what golf course would open themselves up to the lawsuits. Idiots always sue others for the idiotic things they do to themselves.

You're right. Everyone should know better but some folks still do because they want to for stupid reasons. Imagine that! So when those who live in gator habitat feed them, it's no wonder fur babies go missing.
