Israeli officials have tried to float a trade-off in which they would extend the temporary moratorium on settlement construction in exchange for the release by the United States of Jonathan Jay Pollard, the American who pleaded guilty to spying for Israel and is serving a life term in an American jail, Israel’s Army Radio reported Monday.

Israel has more spies in the US than any other country. I fail to see the benefit to the USA of continued financial and military support of Israel.

I count on Ronnie P to do all my citations, it gives him something to live for. I made a pledge to do so, and will keep that pledge. Now, back to the subject of Israeli extortion...

Netanyahu has been under international pressure to keep the freeze in place, but faces fierce opposition from ultra conservatives in his governing coalition. Netanyahu reportedly believes obtaining the release of convicted spy, Jonathan Pollard, would give him political cover if he extends the moratorium.

Pollard is regarded as a hero in Israel, but a traitor by the U.S. government. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for passing classified documents to the Israeli government in the 1980s while working in the U.S. Navy's intelligence unit.

Netanyahu has in the past asked U.S. presidents for clemency for Pollard, only to have those requests rejected.

Jonathan Pollard is an American of Jewish descent, born in Galveston Texas, who established a career as an intelligence analyst for the US Navy. There have been many theories offered as to why Pollard decided to betray his country of birth to the Jewish state, but that Pollard did betray his country of birth to Israel is beyond all doubt. Pollard’s defense was that he did not spy so much against the United States, only that he spied for Israel, sending them documents that in his opinion the US should have shared with Israel anyway.

Israel waited 13 years to admit Pollard had been spying for them, and now lobbies for his release, having granted him Israeli citizenship.

Yes, that is what I think. Why would I spend actual time on a post for this forum? Try to stay on the topic of the post, or start your own. No one cares what you think, or what I think, but I am interested in what the leaders of the State Department think of Israels plan, and the potential release of a treasonous spy, whose actions cost the lives of loyal American spies.
Pollard should have been given to Israel a long time ago...in a body bag!
As for the latest "blackmail" attempt, if the US Government really had any bite to the "bark" they would immediately suspend the $2.775 to 3 BILLION dollars in annual US aid to Israel.
Let them build all of the settlements they want to...
But then the Jewish Lobby in this country would completely freak out...and they have "clout".
They may have been an asset during the "Cold War", but then again, that is why the Muslim world hates the US. Playing favorites for decades.
As to the Palestinians? They have been offered land for a State but have shown that this is not REALLY what they seek. The complete destruction of Israel is their goal.
Let 'em ALL eat SANDwiches.
Pollard sold information to at least three nations including Israel. The identities of the other two were never disclosed. He ought to be executed, sewed in a pig skin bag and buried in the middle of Death Valley in an unmarked grave next to many Islamic terrorists.

However, Israel is not the largest purveyor of spies in the US.

China, seeking military and industrial secrets, is probably the largest.

Russia, seeking mainly industrial and some military secrets, is probably the next largest.

France, seeking mainly industrial secrets, is probably third. They operate thru the Deuxième Bureau. Which, despite an official denial, still exists. I've had unfortunate experience with them.

Some sandwiches I like.

This issue is somewhat dated. I do agree somwhat, with the notion of increasing our distance.
