KFC apologizes to scarred girl asked to leave

The fast-food chain is looking into allegations that a 3-year-old girl with facial injuries was asked by a restaurant employee in Mississippi to leave because she scared patrons. KFC said it’s also donating $30,000 toward her medical bills.

Too late for me, I'll never go to KFC again. I like Popeye's better anyway.

What the hell were they thinking...???

So sad. These stories are always so screwy because they just don't make sense, and the first thing that pops to mind is that something in the story is missing. The child is terribly scarred, but nothing in the way to make anyone scared. They should be more scared of the chicken. If anything it should provoke pity for the child, and of course make people wonder how she was injured. Arggggggg, what really happened? Were people staring and the grandmother was upset about that, made a comment and some employee that had no tact maybe suggested they just leave? Poor baby, she's really been through some rough stuff, with lots more to come, and hopefully through treatment and plastic surgery her face can be fixed, and this won't stop her from going out in public and having as normal a life as possible.

==================================

The attack happened in April while Victoria was visiting her grandfather's mobile home in Simpson County, Mississippi. Three pit bulls burst into the home and mauled Victoria, covering her body with injuries head to toe. Victoria's grandfather, Donald Mullins, fatally shot two of the dogs, WAPT reports. Mullins and his girlfriend, Rita Tompkins, were later arrested on child endangerment charges.

According to a post on her Facebook recovery page, Victoria lost her right eye in the attack and sustained a broken upper and lower jaw, a broken nose, and smashed cheekbones. She also lost the ability to move the right side of her face.

"The right side of her face is paralyzed. She's got a lot of surgeries to go through and she won't even look in the mirror anymore," Victoria's grandmother, Kelly Mullins, told local news outlet 16 WAPT News. "When we go to a store, she doesn't even want to get out [of the car]. She's 3 years old and she's embarrassed about what she looks like. She's embarrassed and I hate it because she shouldn't be. It ain't her fault."

KFC spokesman Rick Maynard told WAPT in an email that "KFC launched an investigation as soon as we were made aware of this report. We take this very seriously, as we have zero tolerance for any kind of hurtful or disrespectful actions toward our guests. Our investigation is ongoing, but we will make things right for this beautiful little girl and her family, and will work with the franchisee to take appropriate action at the restaurant."

On Friday, Victoria's family posted a message to Facebook that read: "KFC has reached out for more information thanks to the overwhelming support for Victoria. Thank you for sharing her story and please continue to pray for her and her recovery. She still has several surgeries in her future and will continue to need our love and support."

UPDATE: KFC is now investigating the incident. A spokesperson said Sunday that the company is also giving $30,000 toward Victoria Wilcher's medical bills.

I don't know about a hoax, but it sounds a bit off. Of course it will never happen, but they shouldn't report these things unless they have the other person's side of the story first. IF it's a hoax, it will be like all the rest, not exposed until the hoaxer has gotten thousands of dollars from people. KFC jumped in with 30 grand before they even started to investigate, and even if it's true, how is it their responsibility anyway? I think it's great that they gave her the money, she will need it, but I also hope there is someone, somewhere, besides her family, that will be in charge of the money and make sure it's used only for the little girl's treatments.

Not a hoax, go to KFC's FB book & you will see discussions about this.

Are you saying because of what an employee is paid, that employee has the right to ask anyone that's scarred to leave the restaurant?

If you believe the internet has become an expansion of the national inquirer, what are you doing on this forum? Not trying to be ugly, just curious.

While I agree that the internet has it's share of hoaxes. This is not one of them. In fact the internet is what drew attention to this matter in the first place and got more people involved. I don't do social media and personally think it's a silly waste of time but I applaud it in this particular case. Because it got results!

lol,, no what I am saying is food service employees get paid little. thus often the companies are scraping the bottom of the barrel.  how can a company control all of it's employees? things like this just seem to be about someone getting money. I am sure KFC doesn't have a policy that scarely people are to be thrown out (or I would be thrown out lol).

The reason I ask 1130 if he was saying an employee has the right to ask anyone that's scarred to leave the restaurant was because of low pay. It sounded to me as though he were saying they have a right to do that.

As vic says, low iq doesn't automatically equal low pay, or bad behavior. Vic and I may be thinking of the same people right now. Anyway, as unpopular as my statements are, I'd still like the rest of the story before I start condemning anyone, especially a company that wouldn't have any control over the situation. For one thing, I can't imagine anyone being scared of the child, because as scarred as she is, she's not scary. That's one reason I question the story as told by grandma. Could it be, that because she has trouble eating, it was unpleasant for others to see? If so, they can look away and not stare at the child, or they could leave.

And, sorry, but if a manager asked me to do something like that, I'd refuse, and tell him or her that if they wanted it done, such situations are why there are managers and it's on them. Anyone finding this child scary would have a hard time functioning in public imo. Because as you say, there are plenty of really scary and downright nasty looking people out there that really would ruin a person's appetite and make them leave a store.

This is a not from the get-go.  I mean look at this beautiful face and tell me who would be scared of it. There are too much disfigurement in the world today for a company to ask someone to leave because of it. I do not believe the everything went the way that it is being written. There are so many evil beings in this world and you never know what they will do to get money. If someone at KFC did write that note they should be fired on the spot and the monies that the child gets should be put in the hands of someone that will see that it all goes to the little girls surgeries and anything else that  SHE  will need. Has the note that was written been published and checked out to see if it was really written by someone at KFC?  There are just so many unanswered questions. How  could three pit bulls just charge in and attack the little girl? Did the dog's stay inside?  The pit bulls just burst into the home, if you were that  Grandparent and the girlfriend what would you grab first? Most would grab the little girl and get her out of danger. I think that all involved should be checked out and try to find out how this sit up came to be. I for one do not think that KFC  would have done something like this for It is too big of a franchise to stoop to something as low as this and I believe that they will see that the little girl is taken care of.

I haven't read anything about a note.

This is from one of many news articles that has printed the same statement. "They just told us, they said, 'We have to ask you to leave because her face is disrupting our customers."

Even on her Facebook page, the grandmother hasn't mentioned anything about a note.

Pit bulls are the result of people consciously breeding animals to have an attack mentality or in which such a mentality is readily cultivated. The breed should be outlawed! Given the frequency of of unprovoked attacks by this noxious breed, it is senseless to allow it to persist.  End of story; no convoluted apologetics accepted.

My mistake, Thanks for pointing that out.
