HOUSTON (KPRC/CNN) - Investigators say a young father accidentally shot and killed himself while taking selfies in southwest Houston.
"It's just crazy how somebody could be here one minute, and in seconds, they're gone," said Daisha Jones, the victim's sister.
Family members are devastated after police said their loved one, Deleon Alonso Smith, accidentally shot and killed himself.
"It's the worst feeling in my life," said Eric Douglas, Smith's uncle.
Investigators said Smith was taking selfies with a gun at the apartment at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, just before the gun went off.
"It wasn't like he was trying to do it on purpose," Jones said. "No, he was not trying to kill himself."
"When you try to get your life on the right path, the devil tries to mess with you," Jones said.
Investigators say Smith's cousin was in the apartment but in another room when it happened.
Police say that cousin told them it wasn't their gun, that they found it.
The 19-year-old's family said he had two young children and was to start attending college Wednesday.
