The Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) has written a book (HORRORS!) without telling his GOP puppetmasters what he was up to. He also has been making speeches and accepting gratuities, which he pockets for himself rather than, say, turning the loot over to the RNC. There seems not to be anything illegal about taking that money, but it rankles a lot of Republicans, since contributions have fallen way off during Steele's tenure.
Steele, in a couple of recent interviews, has suggested bluntly that the GOP critics of these actions should just "shut up." Numerous GOP Congressional staffers and other GOP faithful close to seats of party power are leaking all over the place to the effect that Steele is making a lot of GOP leaders very uncomfortable.
Will Steele be canned and replaced? That raises more uncomfortable issues for the fractured Republican party. Its wingnut fringe, A.K.A. the "tea party" faction, is becoming increasingly noisy, numerous, and influential and would very likely oppose seating a new chairman from the party's dwindling moderate ranks. Moderates, already uncomfortable with the embarrassing antics of the tea party crowd, will oppose the radicalizing of the party that would be signalled if some perceived (and probably real) extremist were to succeed the unpopular Steele.
Who knows what evil lurks?????
