Hi to all my Forum Friends,

MUST BE IN A REMINISCING MOOD TONIGHT.   My all time favorite song is this one:  "Stars Fell On Alabama."   When I was in high school (Sheffield High School, Sheffield, Alabama) in 1951-55, all our formal dances always ended with that song, "Stars Fell On Alabama."   So many wonderful memories wrapped up in this song.

Life truly was different then, especially in Alabama -- the land of "Yes, ma'am" - "No, ma'am" and "Yes, sir" - "No, sir."   The time when a man, or a growing boy like me, always opened the door for a lady, stood when she entered the room, gave her his seat.  The time of sweet tea, banana puddings, Sunday dinners (lunch to you folks who are not from the South), and family.

Yes, there was the dark side of the South in the 1950s; but, tonight I prefer to remember the soft, tender side -- the "Y'all come back now, ya heah?" side.  I can't tell you how many times I saw my mom and step-dad with their coats on ready to leave -- and someone just dropped in to visit.  They took off their coats and sat down to talk.

I never had to call my aunts or cousins to visit; I just went.   I will never forget when I was in the Air Force in Denver and my girl friend and I were going to visit her folks on Sunday afternoon.  She told me, "Let me call first to see if we can visit."   I was shocked.  You have to make an appointment to visit your mom?  Yes, I realize that is the polite way to do it.  But, when I grew up in Sheffield, Alabama -- we just went to visit.

This version of "Stars Fell On Alabama" is one of my favorites:

I also really like this version by Billie Holiday:

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,
