Actually I was surprised I hadn't heard more about it sooner. I fully expected to hear many clergy would be caught up in the information release. I know of some pastors in this area that have been caught with past indiscretions and acts and at least one has returned to the pulpit of the Church that he was a pastor of at the time of the affair. It also shouldn't surprise people that one independent and unsigned survey revealed that at least two Southern Baptist Pastors responded that they were Atheist but remained in the ministry positions because they couldn't find any other jobs that were as easy and paid as much.
One problem is that today many Churches and parishioners choose their pastors based upon how good a speaker they are or by how many books they have written and based upon the pedigree on their wall (diploma(s) and schools/seminaries that they attended and graduated from). Little attention is paid to prayer and other "fruits of the (Holy) Spirit. My own belief is a Pastor/Minister is effective, from a Spiritual sense, only because of the Spiritual Gift that God has Given them and less from the schooling they have received or how well they can talk or write.
Secondary to Pew Committee practices selection process of choosing pastors comes the bloated and huge salaries that they pay Pastors. Some Pastors will not consider a Church (calling them) unless the Salaries are revealed prior to anything else and those Salary and benefit packages are well into the 6 digit areas. Then some Churches have associate pastors to take away some of the less desirable (to them) requirements of being pastor like the Hospital ministries and Home ministries leaving only the sermon preparation and delivery to the main pastor. It shouldn't surprise people when they get an employee that has considered the job s an occupation rather than a privilege and sacrifice and many times those very Churches themselves fail to demonstrate the Fruits of the (Holy) Spirit to the community that they serve. I do though believe and feel these are in the very minority of Churches and Ministers.
Ministers/Pastors are human like everyone else and just as vulnerable to temptations and morally failing as anyone else in their congregations yet so many congregations place them upon such high pedestals and positions of honor that we make them kings and in some ways deify them and then are so surprised when they fail. Often though it's not through services like Ashley Madison but rather though personal counseling where they allow themselves to be put in positions of temptation and to various women in weak and susceptible positions such as when they lose a spouse or are suffering from infidelity (of their own spouses) themselves. Many Ministers go through counseling and training to hopefully teach them the dangers of such situations and how to avoid being put in positions where they, themselves, can put themselves in high risk situations. None of this is excusing the behavior or the act but rather to say it does happen and sometimes isn't as much as a surprise.
