Mystery: How Wealth Creates Poverty in the World

By Michael Parenti

There is a “mystery” we must explain: How is it that as corporate investments and foreign aid and international loans to poor countries have increased dramatically throughout the world over the last half century, so has poverty? The number of people living in poverty is growing at a faster rate than the world’s population. What do we make of this?

This is an excellent article by Parenti, who I always liked. He sums it up very well.

I have watched them do this for over twenty years and as Parenti asks, how can liberals still be so blind? I think he is referring to both politicians and people like Bono. Also of course the corporate media too.

It has been described as modern day colonialism. In the past Countries would send their troops and occupy the country and extract the resources and wealth through occupation, repression, brutality and slavery. (Like Iraq) When you read the horrible conditions and hard lives for people of these sweatshops you see there is very little difference between slavery and sweatshops. People are beaten or killed that try to resist or unionize.

Today they use the countries small elite oligarchy and keep the country in debt. Troops are only necessary when the structure is threatened by revolt. (Like the Mideast) Remember John Perkins's excellent accounts in "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man," on how all this works.

In many cases the US gives aid, tax payer money, so these oligarchies buy weapons from US manufacturers who then use the weapons to suppress their people into these conditions. The US is using American workers money to help take workers jobs. Some of these countries, like Brazil, the Philippines, El Salvador, Nigeria and others have death squads that kill labor leaders and journalists that try to expose and take on these conditions. Meanwhile the corporate media never seems to understand what's going on. More concerned about Brittney Spears and "run away brides."

One thing though, Parenti says the UN created the World Bank and IMF in 1992, or something like that. I am not sure if that is a misprint, because it was in 1948 or 49 I believe, or did something changed that I missed, I don't know. Either way the policy is the same.

And like I keep saying, they are now doing to us what they have been doing to the world by privatizing every thing. It is probable that our food will be grown for luxury foods or export while we starve and it will be the same with our water. It will be controlled y foreign multinational corporations that seek only the highest profits. They will be protected by our own troops. Only the wealthy here, the 1% elite or so, will be able to afford things and will live in high luxury while the rest of us struggle.

This is one of the reasons people better care and pay attention. For twenty years it was very hard to get anybody to care and I always knew, and read, that they will do this to us someday too. Same with these military repressive governments we have been installing and supporting around the world for decades. Nobody here cared, but now they will turn these goons on us. We will see if people will still support torture then.
