I guess the US can take consolation that our Brit cousins fouled up at a much larger scale than we have -- so far.  This IT program was supposed to be the equivalent of the proposed nationwide electronic health record program for the entire US.  The Brits in a nation about 21 percent of the US wasted over $16 billion on a similar grandiose scheme.

“A plan to create the world's largest single civilian computer system linking all parts of the National Health Service is to be abandoned by the Government after running up billions of pounds in bills. Ministers are expected to announce next month that they are scrapping a central part of the much-delayed and hugely controversial 10-year National Programme for IT.

Instead, local health trusts and hospitals will be allowed to develop or buy individual computer systems to suit their needs – with a much smaller central server capable of "interrogating" them to provide centralised information on patient care. News of the Government's plans comes as a ****ing report from a cross-party committee of MPs concludes that the £11.4bn programme had proved "beyond the capacity of the Department of Health to deliver".”

what a pitiful response. when i attempted to explain the AHA website complications, your reply was "amazon and ebay" handle the information... now, you say i don't understand the complexity... how about this, you don't contribute anything that we can't get from the fox news entertainment talking points. you contradicted yourself and i'm the one that has the comprehension problems... gotcha.

Amazon. com and Ebay.com are good examples of websites that provide high volume service.

Notice it says "beyond the capacity of the Department of Health to deliver."

The issue here is not the complexity of the website, but the inability of the government.  Amazon and Ebay had the financial motivation to make their sites work, to fully test the sites and to react quickly to any issues that arose during the building of their sites.

Our government, however, did not have the sense to make any of the contractors the 'lead' on the project and apparently didn't have any sense to lead it themselves.  A bunch of contractors were out writing code, hoping that when they threw it all together, it would mystically start working.  Imagine the surprise when it didn't.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think the republicans could have made it happen either.  The main difference, however, is they didn't promise to.......

James T,

You've pretty much nailed it.  Government has grown and become so complex it can no longer manage itself.  The Brits hit the wall with this project, started under the previous left wing Labor government.  The new conservative government has enough sense to realize it was time to back off and let local governments complete the tasks.

The left believes that central planning at a national level is the way to do almost everything.  Despite the fact that central planning has failed again and again.  Crash got one thing right, "when you're dead, you don't know you're dead."  The federal government has reached beyond its limits in so many areas, it's become a leviathan unable to do its basic job.. Like the Walking Dead, it lurches along consuming the healthy to satisfy its zombie instincts.
