I am an alabama fan, and i think the way Saban treats the media is a joke. He might be the greatest guy in the world, but his perception is he is a jerk. I hope he wins for years to come, but it seems to me that he could be a real man and instead of tearing into a media member for asking a dumb question just say im not going to answer that. SABAN treats people like they are scum he is a classless person

Terry Bowden is arrogant, which I guess makes him a jerk, but I think that maybe the whole Auburn thing and not being able to coach for a while may have mellowed him out a little. My sources close to the situation at Bama agree, Saban is a jerk (He may say hello in public, but he treats party guests just like he does the media. Oh and he hates Bama fans comparison of him to the Bear)

Just for you , we all like links to "tales" told on here . lol Razzer
Sounds to me like your a bitter Auburn fan who knows that Alabama and Nick Saban are about to own you again. ROLL TIDE

What Coach in college football isn't a jerk........at some point? Would you prefer him to be really sweet like say Shula? I liked Shula but as a Coach his inability to be a jerk held him back! Have we gotten to the point where we need everything sugar coated for us? Come on this is SEC college football, not a class on proper etiquette toward fans and media. I could care less if he's nice or not as long as he keeps bringing the talent on the field! I'd rather have it laid out in black and white, than pu**y footin around the truth! What a joke! Roll Eyes
hayssco you might want to check your sources or perhaps your sources were trying to "rub elbows" with Saban at a party and he would not have any of it... The important thing is the players and coaches respect Saban and he is doing the job (and doing it well) he was hired to do. He was not hired to win any popularity contest or treat the media with kid gloves.

And who would like being compared to the Bear!!!? Unfortunately, no one will ever be able to live up to the Bear in 99% of the UA fan base’s eyes.
As far as his dislike of being compared to the "Bear" I totally agree with him! He is not the Bear, he will never be the Bear. There will never be another Bear. He is Nick Saban and when its all said and done, he will have his own legacy at Alabama, he won't share it with the Bear, and that is as it should be!

Yeah, I'll check with my source, who is around Saban constantly. Not trying to rub elbows. Working.
I like Nick Saban, but he will never, ever be, Paul Bear Bryant!
I know this, you know this & he knows this!

I, for one, don't want a lil sweetie coaching Alabama!
I want someone who doesn't care to bring a little attitude to the table if need be.
His players & collegues think alot of him & respect him, and thats ALL that matters to me.
I'm a die-hard Auburn fan, and wouldn't blink twice if Saban walked past me on the street, but i personally love the way he treats the media. Yes, they are just asking questions and trying to do their job, but so is he. His job isn't in press relations or throwing out a good quote or selling newspapers. The media isn't out to do ANYONE any favors and neither should he. Tommy Tuberville was a master at media relations and almost seemed to enjoy being in front of reporters, but every year hatchet jobs on Auburn came out like clock-work (including recently). Why? Because people read them. Both fan-bases flocked to them. Web site hits went up. It got people talking. It didn't matter if the truth was stretched, the damage was done. And yes I know being Nick Saban and "the University" pretty much automatically puts you on top in this state, but given the chance do you not think a reporter would churn out a controversial story for his own good? I'd also imagine the whole "I won't be the coach at Alabama" fiasco at Miami probably has a lot to do with it. Besides, he's doing exactly what i would do; Doing my job as best as I could and not care what anyone else thinks (or writes about it).

BTW, didn't the Football WRITERS Association just vote him the coach of the year?

Because its a different time & Nick Saban does not have the patience that Coach Stallings had.
Not saying that's a bad thing, but Saban is Saban, and he is good for the University of Alabama!
So a pot shot at Terry Bowden for no reason.... ya'll do know he ain't Auburn's coach anymore don'tcha? hahaha... Hate him if you want but he is a motivator and a heck of a coach... he just couldnt consistantly bring in SEC calibur talent... UNA will get anybody they want... mark it down, UNA will win a championship under Bowden then he'll jump to a D=1 job.
And man how I love to hear folks gushing over the bahr!!! give me more... even though very few, if any of you were alive during his tenure nor would you ever admit to the shady recruiting practices his administration had. the bahr is revolutionary, ya'll are right... he is the godfather of the dominant recruiters in history...lay the cash on the front porch of the kids you wand and watch'em flock... LOL
As for Saban... he is a jerk. At least based on all reports from folks that have worked with and around him....an absolute tool. My guess is that his demeanor is a large reason for the fact that he has coaches jumpin ship for lesser or lateral jobs. Winning will mask any of those problems though.... Don't know how his attitude will be accepted if he don't match last season though....
I think a mix of Saban and Tuberville would give you a good coach in terms of personality. I think Tubb's was a softy and that hurt the team. If he hollered at a coach or player I picture him apoligizing and buying them a milkshake to make it up... point being, the extremes are bad either way you go.

I kinda like the was Nicky is treating the press, the press is out of hand and think they can do whatever they please...somebody needs to put them in their place. He doesn't owe the press anything, they are asking the questions so they need to show some respect to Saban.

...You are so right!! Loud mouthed rude reporters/press are not just irritating....THEY ARE THE MOST DISGUSTING !!!

I love watching tide fans worship him. Let him go 8-5 and see how you guys feel. Trust me, it will happen. He ain't gonna be on top forever, not in the SEC. He has already burned bridges with some important people in the state that have the power to replace him when things go south. Tuberville was in the same position after the 2004 season. just wait....

Nice post..... as far as Saban and the media at his press conferences, he goes to the podium, says he wont answer questions about injuries and BAM, the first reporter asks about Andres knee. He had just said no questions about that but the sportswriter apparently wasnt paying attention. Then 3-4 questions later, another injury question. So yeah, Saban was a jerk because be demands the best from his players, coaches and when he is addressing the media, he expects them to do their job professionally. Its his press conference and he sets his ground rules. Most times the media dont respect that. You ever been asked a stupid question? How does it make you feel?
I work around college football coaches. Like anyone else, some are jerks, some are not. I'm fortunate that the coaches I work with are great guys. From what I've heard from those who have been around Saban, and this is second hand so I can't vouch for it, is that he is difficult to work with.

It's a love/hate relationship between the media and coaches. Covering the school is free promotion. If people are buying papers to see what a coach said, then they are also buying tickets and watching broadcasts to see what a coach will do. The athletic directors know this, that's why they have press conferences. So it is the coach's job to deal with the media, the AD told him to do so.

However, the coaches are football guys, not broadcast guys. Dealing with us is simply part of their job that many would prefer to do without. That's why we try to make it as quick and painless as possible and they give us a few minutes so we can have our soundbites. If a coach looses his temper it's usually because someone didn't do their research and asked a dumb question or the coach is simply in a bad mood and wants to lash out. Either way, the worst thing for a coach to do is make an ass out of himself with cameras around. We know how to get that stuff national in about 5 minutes and if it's good, it will be around for many years.

Perfect example. Worst possible way for him to handle the media, now this will be part of his career forever.

Ok, you that know me, know that I am a diehard Auburn fan, but I will stay this, Saban is a Great Coach, and holds his players to high standard, and his coaching staff and his-self, to even a higher standard, he beleives in his abilities, and that is not being ****y, he is not perfect, nor will he ever be. College Football is a big money business. players get paid well (though not from money, but from the best education that one can get) Saban was brought to Alabama for one reason and one reason only, that was to win, and no matter what he does in the media or away from it, as long as he wins, then there will be no problem.
I am sure, and this is my opinion, that The Bear was a complete (** at times to the media! If this nonsense keeps up with saban, then he will not stay near as long as i thought he would, which is not that long to begin with~~~~

Let's rewind back to 2007, from ESPN.com:

"The Tide first approached Saban shortly after firing Mike Shula. Huizenga has said he received repeated assurances from Saban that he would return in 2007, and two weeks ago Saban said: "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

He is definitely a straight shooter :P
