Higher education groups, tuition and fees have increased at double the rate of inflation every year, on average, for more than 40 years. Average annual incomes would need to exceed $ 210,000 to have kept pace. That sounds about right for work pay around here in the Shoals for the Average Household Income.  No Problem, keep hiking those tuition fees to help perform & maintain all the New building projects, add staff, etc. After all, that will draw more students to justify new construction dollars, etc. During the lean years, Universities just cry to politicians we need more money to maintain the infrastructure or whatever we have that already exist. (Like Government, it gets Bigger & Bigger & Bigger to maintain)

Anyone that is ignorant and thinks that there is anything "Free" is the problem! Young people, we all know are "Naive" but, there are a lot of adults, like those who support Bernie that do not understand Economics 101 or Do Not Care!(DNC Crowd). The "Free Stuff" will not be paid for by the top 1% as they know how to evade, divert or shift or find loopholes or move out of the country or better yet, just plain LIE like Hillary. The middle class working people are the ones that will carry the burden, as always. The middle class is disappearing daily, as Obama's worst economic recovery in 100 years, with his goal for Americans to maintain a lower standard of living income for "all middle class folks", through the Dems "Equality" spew, so lower income folks will fell better about their economic situation. Most of us fall into some category we strive to become, who do you think will pay? NO Money crowd, Little Money, Some Money, More than Average Money, Good bit Mo Money, Lots & Lots of Money, Multi-Millionaire Money, Billionaire Money, Sorry, No Trillionaire Money I know of to squeeze, exist...

The rate of increase in tuition may be traced against the level of government guaranteed student loans.  Universities, competing for students, added amenities, which added to the costs of tuition and other fees.

One of my great objections if the cost of book.  Professors and schools should unite to bring down the costs.

One of my great objections is the cost of book.

In my Inorganic Chemistry Class, Had to buy New Edition, could not buy Used Book. Next year, Organic Chemistry, Had to buy New Edition, Again. Seemed like Chemistry Books were the Most Expensive in College of all the other courses. Seemed like the University had contracts with Book Publishers to have New Editions published about every 3-4 years. Universities may have gotten a rebate back from publishing company. Don't know. Most of Basic Chemistry education doesn't change. Just like the Periodic Table. May have added a few radioactive elements since its founding. Chemistry Elements and Equations are the Same for early level education purposes. I'm sure there is a sound rationalization of why have so many new Editions are printed for elementary Chemistry courses. Advanced Specific Chemistry applications, I can rationalize the high Dollar Cost due to Research advancements of application. But for the Basic, Guess that's one way to Weed out individuals to reduce class size. Flunk out or can't afford the new editions. LOL

I remember Organic in a painful way, It didn't come easy. 5hrs per day & Weekends trying to get it thru my thick Skull.. For FunBreak, I would go to my grandmothers and Rototiller her Garden for her.. I hated Gardening before I took Organic, but it all worked out.. I tip my Hat, Chem Major...Well Done..

Organic = Notecards, notecards, and more notecards.  I did enjoy using the NMR and then try to figure out what the compound was only having a graph with a bunch of peaks, benzene was the easiest to identify.  Never used my chem degree, except to get another non-related technical job I'm still doing today.

Back before the libs made college unaffordable, one could go to UNA for $700/semester taking a full load.  One could easily work part time or do like I did, join the National Guard + work part time to pay for college and graduate debt free.  That would be considered cruel and unusual punishment these days.

Same here, basic tuition was $135 per semester -- later $185.  Lived at home, worked at McDs and graduated in four years.  After Nam, went back for post graduate work.  Working at McDs, Army Reserve, plus GI bill kept me in school at about $225 per semester, plus books.  Democrats really screwed that up in the last few decades.
